I have a 129 that I recently brought home. It has not been used in several years. I cleaned the carb, new plug, and checked oil. It turns over with good!!!!! spark (touched plug wire by mistake while cranking engine)and has good compression. It will not start and seems to be backfiring through the carb. I took off the head and there is a lot of carbon build up and the gasket is in terrible shape. It looks like the valves are working correctly. What would be the most likely causes for not starting? Thanks.

Dang man!
Don't you know nothin?
You gotta hold on to that plug for a full 30 seconds to prime that puppy!

Matt,
I think so, but I am not very good at timing issues.

Charlie,
It was the fastest plug wire inspection in history.

Clean things up really well, check for carbon sticking to the valves, put a new head gasket on. Check the points gap and see what you come up with.
It could be a number of things, but you have to rule out a few to find what the problem is or could be.

Also, if you don't have the Kohler manual, click the FAQ's above and you can download it for free.

Charlie- you can stop your Snow Dance anytime now!!! I'm sick and tired of fixing my snow fleet everytime I turn around!! And yes I did do the maintenance on them before the snow flew, but this winter has been unusually hard on them and me

I'm ready for some quality time at a plow day or just even mowing the lawn!!!

Michael, If it hasn't run in a while and pops through the carb, it's probably a fuel problem. Make sure you have fresh clean gas in the tank. then pull the fuel line off the carb and make sure you have full flow through the line, if you do put the line back on. Take off the bowl on the bottom of the carb
and make sure you have a good flow through the needle and seat, if you do gently pick up the float to see if the needle shuts the fuel off, if it does put the bowl back on and know you have gas available. Look at the top of the carb theres a scew head straight down from the top. Now back that screw out and remove it, it's long. Look at it, it should have (I think) 6 holes though it. They are small find them and make sure they are open and clear, if you find vanish or rust, You will probably have to soak it and rebuild it. but if you find a couple pieces of junk just clean them out. Put the screw back in and reset it back about 1 1/2 from bottoming. Make sure you have a filter on it or sediment bowl, Try to start it again. Let us know what happens.

Dave,
I should have mentioned I did clean the bowl and made sure gas was coming through. I also lifted up on the float and it stopped the gas. I will try the screw on top the carb tomorrow. Thanks.

I figured out why my oil level was so low I
changed the trans oil and started the engin oil change walked around to get the light and oil was poring out of the left axel. When I was taking the rear panel off to get a better look
at the serial number I noticed my rachett wrench
fit between the right wheel and the fender but not the right upon further investigation I noticed the left axel stuck out farther than the right. is it a seal?

DONALD - Yes, on the cam gear.....and the crankshaft has to come out to get the cam out....and the flywheel backplate has to come off to get the crank out.....and the flywheel has to come off to remove the backplate. And the governor gear is the LAST movable part to be removed from inside the crankcase.

Guess that's why there's "Disassembly Instructions" in the Kohler manual.... ;-)

CHARLIE- Nice cover pic on that magazine. That's the sharpest quarter-scale Mini-FARMALL I've seen yet.

Lucas,

I is likely a bad or missing seal. You mention that your wheels are different distances from the frame, how much?. I would pull the rear cover off and make sure the axle snap ring is on the end.

Jim

Corey, you did remove the cam gear retaining screw, right?
Lucas, How far out is the axle sticking? they are retained by a snapring at the very end in the differential.

Denny, that Mini 826 belongs to Kurt Smith, here's a LINK to another photo of it. When you find the photo, scroll down a tad to my post where I posted more links to more photos. I agree it's one of the best customs I've seen. Though Paul Funk's mini Farmalls are quite nice.

Bruce N,
Thanks for the tip. I figured if i had just let all the stuff melt off my 124, and let it dry for a day or two, it would be ok. I dont know, i'll find out. Thanks.
