I have a question for the old timers. Or at least the ones who have plowed in the spring allot. From what I understand the ground thaws from the top down. I would guess that about a week of 50 degree days would be enough to thaw the ground for plowing. This year we, and the plow grounds, have been floating around the freezing mark. I know around here the ground is hard in the morning and soft at night. Is the strength of the sun this time of the year enough to thaw the ground for plowing even though the temperature is hovering around freezing? Back when I used to plow when I was a young'n if I plowed too early I would hit parts of the ground that were still frozen, and other that were just fine. Do you think the ground might still be too frozen this year?

Terry,
The ground has been thawed enough to plow for almost 2 weeks.
In fact, I went out to a bean field up my way today and dug a hole 3 feet down and found no frost at all, and the PD field area has been a tad warmer that we've been lately.

I am staying there fri and sat night. Gonna be a slow drive tho with the I-6 F150. My buddy and I are leaving sometime in the morning after loading. We decreased the # of tractors we're taking to just his there and his and my 1200 from Charlie on the way back. He's still ondecided on his 73 w/12hp/creeper or O w/smokin 7hp. I'm just not excited about weight-to-engine size on the 150. With the 250 out-of-commission, I'm just glad I still have a second truck to fallback on.
That 14ft enclosed will be nice to pull tho.
WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!! Can't wait!

I can assure you there's no frost here.

Here's the deal. We are going to have this no matter what the weather is like. It may not be optimum plowing conditions, but the whole point is to get together and BS. If it is absolutely too wet to get to the field, we'll meet at the machine shed across the road, school, campdrounds or something.

Also, in the past I have served a meal on Fri night. This year I think we'll just head down to the bar and eat. It'll be cool in the eve and that'll be a place to warm up and hang out.

Charlie and I will keep you posted about it here. Besides, the forecast keeps changing for the better!!

i too will be lodging at the super 8 fri and sat. nights. going to McHenry on wed. to pick up my friends cc100 and leaving rockford for rockford fri. morning. matt and earl are you guys taking u.s. 20 maybe we could meet up somewhere?

Christopher-

I'll be taking 20, but won't be leaving until Friday at about 3:30 p.m.

Hey, I just noticed you live in Rockford, IL, too!

Anybody got room for a 7 1/2 foot snowplow from Saint Peters, Missouri???

Charlie - I know you posted this once, but I can't find it. What time is the Friday night plowing begin?

TIA

Normally there's people trickling in all afternoon on Friday. We usually start to get everything ready when the sun goes down then do a couple rounds when it gets dark. Looks like it's going to be a little chilly so we won't plow too late. Dress warm!!!

I'm gonna take a different route this time, don;t know if it be any better, but I'm going to be taking 173 into Rockford, then winding my way about till I get up to 11 in Wis. somewhere about freeport I think, still a rought plan, last year the F150 didn't like the hills on 20, I may still take it tho. I'd say yes to meeting somewhere but only one tank on the 150 works and it decides when I should make a rest stop, some guys have there wives to tell them what to do, I have my truck! She can be very cranky at times and very tempermental, I don't let anyone else drive her. Well see ya there!

Last year we had a 100% chance for precipitation 2 days before Plowday. This year it's 3 days.

Last year we didn't get a drop. I hope this year is the same!!!!!

Sorry to say but I will not be attending this years plowday due to a stupid mistake I made last sunday.
I crushed my back between the topper on my truck and the seat of my 72 while attempting to load it into the truck. I was rideing the 72 up the ramps, all was going fine until I did not duck far enough to clear the inside of the topper.
I ended up wedged between the top of the topper and the seat of the 72, it took all I could muster just to get off the 72.
My back is in no shape to make the 5 hour ride to plowday much less rideing across a feild on a cub cadet. Pain killers and anti-imflamitory pills are helping some, but being here at work on my feet for 8 hours is no help.

Kentuck,

I'll be on a trip to Louisville tomorrow, turning around about noon (CST). If you could find a way to get there you could ride back as far as Madison and help break-in a new Duramax as well. I think you could catch someone from here to PD as well (I have other commitments) but then you would need to turn on the charm

to hitch a ride back.

Jim - let ME break in the Duramx! I've been wanting to get a hold of one of those.

Naw, thanks but I've seen enough snow this spring.
