SUPER STEER QUESTION?

From reading some posts, I see that super-steer axle modification might cause interference with mowing deck? Am planning on super-steer upgrade to 169 with 44 inch deck. Will this cause problems, and if so, what do I need to do so that tires will not rub on deck? I plan to use stock spindles and wheels with 1" bore.

Thanks,

John-David Reaves

It depends on what tires your going to use.
I did the Supersteer on my 169 and used the standard 16x8.50's with a 44A deck and they just barely skimmed the deck.
You could go with Tri Ribs and not have a problem at all I would think.

Thanks DIGGER.

I have tri-ribs on my 169 already. I know they are on 3/4" hubs, but if I can find the 1" hub wheels, I can always get the tri-rib tires for the new wheels, or just change the tires from one set of wheels to the other.

Are there any problems I might encounter with piviot bolt that holds axle in place?

Thanks,

John-David Reaves

DIGGER.

Actually, I have straight rib tires on the 169 with 3 ribs. Would this type of tire work with the super-steer to avoid scrubbing the mowing deck, since they have rounded cap and sidewalls?

Thanks,

I know your going to think I'm taking the easy way out answering you, but I'll tell you like my dad used to tell me.
There's only one way to find out! Do it and see how ya come out.
Without pics, all the exact details of your setup, it's hard me ME to tell you what exactly to do.
Maybe someone else will chime in with more specifics.

JOHN - The first SS mod posted here was done in My shop by Wyatt Compton. As Son & I used to say, "It was Only a 6-pack job." With Wyatt's 169 raised on a floor jack and making a new tie rod and all the adjustments needed it was only about an hour between the "Before" and "After" pic's. It would have gone quicker but I kept getting in the way. Wyatt was running 16-6.50 X 8 lugged tires on His frt wheels with a newer MTD 44" deck and there were no clearance problems at all. And if I remember the pic's correctly the tractor had a reduced turning radius of almost TWO feet.
KRAIG - K4K is looking good! What kind/size of frt 3-rib tires are those?

Denny, thanks!

I'm not sure what brand they are, I'll check tonight.

While I'm waiting on my owners manual for my 149, can someone direct me to the points location? I'm getting good compression but no spark. Certainly the points are rusty/corroded after being flooded.

Thanks,

Tony

TONY - There's a little stamped metal cover below the engine's exhaust outlet on the front left side of the engine as You sit on the seat....held on with two screws....wire running from the ign. coil into the bottom front corner of the cover.... cover is about an inch wide, inch deep and maybe 2-1/2 inches tall. Both screws have to be loosened/removed to remove the cover and the points are held on with two more screws inside the cover. I'm sure someone will be along in a minute with a picture.

We found that right as I posted. She Runs!
Now I just need a starter solenoid. Time for a carb kit a good cleaning.

BTW, you guys are fast! Thanks for the help.

Here is my 100 right after i changed the sneakers on the Cub. Some times emails are great Thanks Kraiq.

Thanks DIGGER and DENNIS.

I am waiting on arrival of the axle. It should be here by next week. Guess I'll be a few weeks getting around to it, because my lovely wife and I are going to Mt. Airy (Mayberry) North Carolina next week for Mayberry Days.

I have all connections for the hydraulic lift now, just putting things off until I have a full day or two to devote to the effort. I need to pull my driveshaft and replace the fan, install the super steer mod on the steering box, paint and install the super steer axle, install the heim joints, find some wheels and tires, and about a dozen other things before I can complete the reassembly and install the rest of the decals. It has to be a labor of love.

I haven't meant to monopolize the posts, but without other Cub guys around here, I don't have anyone else to ask. I wonder if there are any other members close to me, Oxford, Alabama? If so, maybe we could get together or at least talk on the phone?

By the way, I've volunteered to go on a 6 month deployment to SWA (Kuwait, Iraq, or wherever the decide to send me). There are hundreds of civilians over there helping with the war effort 24/7/365. Dozens are from Anniston Army Depot, where I work, at any one time. Don't know when, where, or if, but I have been accepted. I'll be going as a civilian defense team member. Might be a while before I get back to the Cubs, but I will keep up with the forum while I'm over there, and maybe I'll earn enough extra $$ to add to the herd?

Thanks for all the advice guys,

John-David Reaves

A while back I saw a picture that was a cut away on how to install a three point set up on a wide frame. Looked thru the archives a little but couldn't find it. Craig if you or anyone else still has this would you mind showing it again. My 149 is getting a shave and a haircut and when I'm finished I'll be sure to post a pick. Thanks.

The new (correct) Heim joints arrived yesterday, so I took care of a couple of minor issues left over from the clutch, then mounted the steering box. Only issue I've had with the new Heim joints is that the drag link and tie rods need to go deeper into the joint than they did with the old style ball joints. There was enough thread to work with, but I ended up having to unscrew the lock nuts and run a die down the rods to chase the threads so I could make the required adjustments. Other than that, they seem to work great, and I got the tractor on all fours again.

Engine block is back from the machine shop, but I need to catch up on some sleep before I tackle that. I'll probably take it easy, just clean up some of the tins and maybe something like the mule drive to get them ready for paint.

She's back to being a rolling chassis

I gotta get me one of those flat fenders. They look like fun.

Bruce,
How about a little closer shot of the joints? Like the left spindle assembly. Looks good!

has anybody ever thought about making a "tricycle cub" like the H in the picture? i haven't seen any, but i think it would be cool, what do you guys think?

P.S. the photo was found at http://www.farmall-h.com/

Keith,
How about these!

BTW I was able to work on it with the tractor standing up on its haunches. I used my engine hoist to pick the front end up, then kept the harness attached to provide a measure of safety while I worked on it. Sure makes it easier to work on those Narrow frames!

A shot of the left spindle. The picture I took from the rear was blurry. I see I need to fine-tune the alignment of the ball a little.

Myself and my best friend are planing on restoring my 104 some time. I would love to make it a "tricycle cub", I think they are the coolest thing.
