Wayne, have you looked in the FAQ and/or the CubFAQ for help on finding the SN?

Kraig-

I have gotten use to going straight to Charlies FAQs and overlooked the first one. I see now it answers my question.

Sorry guys, I'll be quiet.

WAYNE - That is the raw casting part number. As machining and assembly went on the part number changed in most cases, the last three of the six numbers mostly, in this case the machined case is probably 385058R91. The suffix R1 would advance to R91. And if engineering changes were made, they could account for that by changing the suffix to R92 and so on. That would signify the part could be used for the R91 part. If the 385058R1 casting was used for something else, say a Cub Farmall, it could have pt number 385059R91, or something considerably higher, like 392095R91.

If You can get your hands on a "REAL IH parts book" the first several pages explains IH's part numbering system. Of ALL and I mean ALL of the part numbering systems I've used the one IH had was the best. When You think of ALL the STUFF IH made, trucks, construction equipment, freezers & refridgerators, combines, balers, tillage equip, tractors, etc. and they ALL used the same part numbering system and even back in 1979 I could punch into their corporate wide computer system and find ANYTHING with an IH 5,6, or 7 digit part number. (minus the suffix of course)

Art, I believe PL = Price List. This is a page from PL-34:

Dennis-

Great information and explanation. I've always been good at learning things the hard way. I see now the number I posted was a standard of sorts. They even post that number, as I'm sure most already knew, in the FAQs. I've gotten in the habit of going straight to Charlies FAQs as I mentioned to Kraig earlier and haven't used these in a while. Brain fartin' left and right.

Thanks again for the education. I think this forum is more educational than a four year college...and I'm still applying.

Ah yes, 1965 and my first job at $95 week. Since I lived in my parents house, I 'spose I could have bought a Cub. But I bought a car instead!

Yeah Art... in IH speak PL = Price List..

If you will note in the (left) Factory Data column under where it says Kind 205 NV, in the listings there, you will find the first TWO digits are the factory model code.

11 for Model 70 w Elec start
20 for the Model 100
12 for the Model 70 with Retractable start... etc., etc,.

I just followed the trail for the rest of them...

BTW, Charlie knows that he is more than welcome to put anything I do in the FAQ, if it's worthy of being there...
