Lucas,
There's probably a good looking brunette that lives there.

Wow, Luke, if I understand your question you're wondering about the PTO clutch and starter pulley basket. Does any of this look familiar?
188902.gif

P.S. Don's right, but I was going to sit here and quietly let him take the blame for the long john story. Just the kind of guy I can be.

I remember the long john part, I was just taking KentuckyKen's word for it.

Guess i'll just go sit on my 70 and sulk.

The bad piston out of the 128, k301 engine has 235802 stamped on the top, can anyone tell me if this is a standard piston or if this is an overbore piston?

Hey frank,
yea that's what I was talking about.

Not proficent with the terms, any idea on how to get the gear(#9 on diagram) off from the engine side.
?

And how much of a pain. Just because I was looking and saw that the grill and such was in the way?

Let me know

Thanks again frank and all
Luke

That's good, Don, but I don't think Luke understands the way the PTO clutch works. He seems to think it's stuck because the toothed fiber "gear" (which I can't even think of the right name for) doesn't come out of the basket. Luke, it's not supposed to! Have you figured out how to download a manual, yet? Binder Books (a sponser at the top of the page) sells them and they're readily available on ebay. Best investment you can make - a great hedge against the day the power's off and the Forums are unavailable. Here's one for the Gipper:

The manual I downloaded is 93 pages. Wouldn't ya know the PTO Clutch info is pages 78-82. I'm on dial-up and the night I downloaded the manual I got it started and went to bed. Got up once during the night to check on it, it wasn't done, but it was there when I got up in the morning!

Nicholas H -

Welcome to the forum!

In addition to what Jeff B mentioned, (Hytran fluid and worn trunion/springs), take note of the engine mounts. Your tractor has/had rubber isolation mounts (ISO Mounts) to reduce engine vibration, but they wear out and are often ignored until the mounting rails and/or the oil pan are damaged from metal-on-metal wear.

Another (probably obvious) thing to consider is the carbuetor and gas tank. You'll want to clean out the tank and use fresh gas, and clean the carburetor well. Better yet, visit one of the sponsors at the top of every page and get a carb rebuild kit.

Congratulations on your acquision. You've come to the right place for answers.

PS - If you don't have Operator's, Maintenance, and Parts manuals, you'll want to get them!

Donald - She's wrong and unlike you I'm NOT affraid of her to say so. Besides this page here has audio files saying they have 3-4 notes and my recording has 8 notes plus I sat and watched one doing it Saturday.

Frank - I knew it was one of you fellers way ta heck up north ! Don probably wouldn't have been able to figure out the trap door anyway !

Luke - See #15 #16 #21 - If #16 is gone or wore out then #21 eats up #15. #16 is a factory fiber button (bronze ones are available) that pushes #15 and releases the PTO clutch. #9 is the fiber friction disc. #10 turns the belt when the PTO is engaged. The friction disc is locked with the engine crank via the part that isn't shown , the sheet metal crinkled cup that it is siting in.

Eric - That's just a part number. If it was an oversized piston then it would have .010 - .020 - .030 stamped in it. There was a pic posted a few days ago of one I believe ... but I could be wrong because I had Don wearing Frank's long johns ... doesn't that make ya shudder !

Dang if Charlie hasn't thrown a bunch of new fellers in here lately and I can't keep up with everybody. You notice Charlie has ran and hid to let us weed through all the questions.

Yeah I noticed charlie hasn't been on in a few days, I hope everything is ok with him and his family.

It's unlike him not to be on atleast once a day.

Hopefully it hasn't been bored out, I will be taking it to the machine shop later today, they said it will take about 2 to 3 weeks before it's done. They have a back log of engines and the one guy who does only the small engines will be on vacation next week.

Plus I am having head shaved and valves checked. All for around 120.00, I hope that isn't too bad.
It includes cylinder bore, valve work if needed, head shaved and crank undersized if needed.

KENtuckyKEN

We are a hardy bunch up here and I haven`t wore long johns for years and I thought that back door was so gasses won`t build up and come up where the smeller is lol.If you look at my post ( Tuesday, April 20, 2010 - 03:49 pm

on the right side you will see the red feeder for the humming birds. I have heard that call many times around here. Some things are not worth arguing about so when she said chickadee , I don`t argue I just smile and agree lol.
I will be sanding and removing some dents from the fenders I got from Frank C for my 1512 and will put a new fan in my 129 today. I have a load of top soil to move and some other chores for the loader.

I have another one that im pretty sure it works but unless that wire comes out i wont fix it cuz then i dont have to push the clutch down to start it

cut the grass here for the first time this year. We are about a month ahead on that but spring overall is early this year

Hey all,

So the pto looks like its gonna have get taken off and cleaned or replaced.

Has anyone ever removed the front end/grill assembly to get at the mechanical pto?

And if so what's the easiest way to do so. Looks heavy....

Thanks again
Luke

Luke, the grill shell is easy to remove. It's best to remove the hood first. There are two bolts holding the hood on and 4 bolts holding the grill shell on. The wires to the regulator should be long enough so that once you have the bolts out you can lift the grill shell off and place it to the side leaving the PTO out in the open and easy to work on. BTDT. Here's a photo of my 125 (very similar to the 123) with the grill shell off for PTO maintenance.
