I located exactly what I was looking for only 2 and a half hours away. This is an IH built 1980 582, sold to me without the twin 16HP Briggs. The metal is clean, dash has one small crack, grille is broken, but otherwise all there and good. I dismantled it to transport it. It came with a solid 44C deck and mule drive.

Can you detail the Command conversion? I'm interested in how the clutch situation is handled.

Since a lot of the tractor pullers use Commands these days, there are adapters available to bolt the clutch driver to the Command flywheel.

True, but with a Command conversion that is truer to stock operation, there is an issue. The adapters are 2" long, and with the Command engine in the proper position to allow PTO/mule drive operation, the gap is around 3.25". Most pullers don't have a PTO installed, so they move the engine rearward more. I wish the manufacturers would produce a thicker adapter so that adapters don't have to be combined. Right now, I will have to purchase two, and have one of them shortened 3/4" to make it work.

What are you using as a clutch driver plate?

You should remove the axles and tubes and clean them out while you have the cover off.

I have made some progress on this build. The Command had leaky head gaskets, so the heads came off, and new Kohler gaskets were installed. The hub for the clutch that I ended up selecting is referred to as a "front drive adapter" KH-24-029-09-S. It is almost 4" long, but ended up being just right.

I used the driveshaft flange assembly with bushing from a 1989 1050. The original clutch driver bolted onto the hub adapter perfectly with a pair of 3/8"-16 bolts.

The .500" thick 1" diameter steel spacers were sourced from Ebay, and much cheaper than the OEM Cub Cadet spacers.

It all fell into place. No issues with lining up anything.

A couple of hours of connecting wiring, hoses and cables, it fired right up, and sounded good. I temporarily used the exhaust from the 2206. I am fabbing up the muffler setup. It drove under its own power for the first time in a long time. The clutch worked perfectly, with no slippage, noise or chatter. There is no vibration at any RPM. It's as smooth as butter. I ran it for an hour and no oil leaks.

I used the throttle cable from the 2206, using the original throttle lever from the 582. I added an oil pressure warning lamp, and modified the outer air cleaner lid to fit the engine properly.

Thanks, Matt. I have sealed up the firewall with closed cell grey foam. I believe IH/CCC used that originally.

Yeah, that will work for awhile at least. I went this route since the foam breaks down due to heat and age, and the adhesive doesn't stay stuck.
