I looked at that 2 bottom set up and it looked like it was on one of the new X-series tractors. If it was a X500 series, the 4-wheel drive would help with traction grately and could probably pull it. Everyone so far has tried to pull a 2 bottom plow with rear wheel drive only.

I know McGyver was using a 7264...

Wes-
Agreed. Having seen the raw 3-point hitch test numbers out of Horicon on the x500 series they can do it, but they need A LOT of weight. . . . . . . and probably a spare RH draft link.

My 128 has blowed the dipstck out a couple of times lately.Could the crankcase breather need
to be changed?
Thanks Jim Davis

Jimmy D,
Depending on how often and how violent it slings the stick, it could be the breather and or a cracked ring.
Have you checked the breather?

Hey digger I have never checked the breather.
It has never smoked or used a drop of oil.
I had the engine built about 4 years ago by a local cub dealer. They do very good work so I dont think it is a ring problem.Any thing special
about cleanng the breather?
Thanks Jim

Nothin to cleaning it, but something doesn't sound right with it be rebuilt not that long ago.
I guess something coulda happened to the screen stuff inside.
Rings can go at any time ya know.

I'll go back in and adjust the spring length. Now I just may not know what smoooth operation is. I would say that the operation is immediate. Moving the lever the least amount results in speed and movement changes. Here in I guess lies the problem. It just seems to me that having a gap on the larger spring will result in a proportionate amount of "speed creep". Is it just expected that there will be some but that its kept to a minimum when the "spring end gap" set at a mininum?

Nonetheless I'll adjust it. Should I strive to achieve a clearance of 1/8 inch or less?

Hope I'm not splitting hairs over minor details but I just want to get it right. With the things I done and redone on my Dune Buggy I've learned that some minor things have significant functions.

On the double bottom plow issue,
What about a double bottom 8inch plow, I would think that a 14hp cub properly weighted should be able to pull a double 8" plow with little problem.

If it was me I would just go to my local Cub dealer and get a new set of springs and end pins and I would know everything was right. If you don't have a dealer I would call someone like Madsons's and have them mail them to you.

2 Bottom Plow,

The linked pic shows a JD Sub Compact pulling 2 10" plows at what looks to me to be about 4" deep.

Some things to remember:

Wes made some good points about the JD tractor's capabilities.

2 10 inch plows at 4" deep is a hell of a lot different than one 10" or 12" at 6-8" deep.

1100# of GT will not consistantly pull 2 bottoms over 6" in width in ALL soil types.......if you think you've got a winner, bring it over to our farm...we'll just see. Now lighter soils may allow you some room to work, but get in some hard stuff and you'll run out of "a$$" real fast with the typical GT.

You mess with your vertical line of draft with a 2 bottom as well. The further back you put the center of load, the less tractor weight the plow will automatically transfer to the ground........you loose traction and need more weight. Ever notice how nice a 10" Brinly sleeve hitch plow can be made to run, even compared to some of the Cat 0 stuff? I believe that is bacause it achieves close to the optimum vertical line of draft.

I have seen several 6" 2 bottoms, the one I saw in operation seemed to work well under reasonable conditions at moderate depths...and for what it was, made a good showing.

I would personally rather have a single 10" or 12", set to plow at least 6" deep, and cutting a nice furrow......bet you'd get more done better with that rig than a 2 bottom behind a GT.

That said.......2 bottoms done right, to scale, and clean are some of the neatest little GT attachments I have seen....certainly worth the effort to build, even if they can't "run with the big boys".

AND.....I will give the guy on the JD forum credit for one of the Easiest, Simplest, and most utilitarian 2 bottom set ups I've ever seen on a small tractor.......down an dirty, but 100% functional and completely reverseable.....excellent application!!!!!

Bottom line on pulling 2 bottoms with a GT...if you build something big enough to be able to always run in the same furrow with the 10" and 12" plows, handle trash, etc. a std. sized GT won't have the a$$ to "handle" the plow....you might get it done, but you'll be on the edge the whole time......(and you won't be following any well set up 12" bottoms

I will say this,
If anyone see's this pair and one of them politely motions you in between them to plow. Just say thanks anyway and wait for the next group to come by! grin

So much for the idea of building a double bottom 8"plow.
Oh well at least I have the option of useing any one of the plows I have,
8" Brinly sleeve hitch on the 72.
10" Brinly sleeve hitch on the 122.
12" Brinly Cat.0 on the 3235.

The engine on my "original" is a replacement. I think the drive pulley is to large (4 1/2"od). What is the proper size? The proper IH belt is WAY to tight even with the drive shaft all the way up.

Charlie, is that 123 your main work tractor now? Old Joe would be proud.)

Kraig,
I tellya what, I've had more fun with that 123 than any tractor I've had in years.
That Peco even sucks up walnuts!!!!!!

And you know what!!!!!!!!!
I've not charged the battery one time all year and it still keeps right on starting! LOL
I guess I should take some close up pics of the starting setup, steering and PTO to show how it's all setup.
