Doing my best to make PD8 a go . . . . completely have the 169 torn down to replace hydro seals and the cork gasket, install a temp sender and to replace ANOTHER hydro cooling fan. Turns out the lift linkages "knee" that allows float bent and turned my float lockout strap into a nice little pretzel, taking out all but half of a fin on the fan. Between having the tractor completely torn down and attendance for myself is now questionable, Plow Day should have ideal weather!

Wyatt, bummer about the 169. You've not had the best time recently one would hope it could only get better.

I'm looking for opinions (I know I came to the right place )) on front tires here's the query: I'll soon be putting new tri rib tires on the front rims for my Original, K4K, and would like opinions on whether I should go with inner tubes or tubeless and why one would be better than the other? TIA

TYLER Turner - Yep Super M-TA's are a bit of a stretch for being on-topic here but REALLY neat old Tractors, Wish I had Dad's old M-TA sitting beside My '54 Super H in the shop! You should probably post Your Q on RED POWER MAGAZINE's new FORUM... Quite a few Guys from here post there and many more lurk... I haven't seen a Guy called WIRENUT post there for quite a while but His company makes repo harnesses.... Several Sponsors, including one from here can help You figure your harness out. Owner's manuals for the old letter series IH's had complete wiring diagrams. To keep this on topic... sort of.... It is possible to put too much organic matter on a garden and make a REAL mess. Unless Your going to leave the garden go fallow for a year or two I wouldn't put any more green matter on than You can plow down with a Brinley..... It takes several years to improve things noticably.

I'm sure some of us have one of these.

But do you have one of these to go with it.

Where is everyone? I know that you guys have an opinion on tubes vs tubeless front tires.......

Question-
Anyone retrofitted a QL-style driveshaft arrangement to a older wideframe? My 169 has a coupler and solid pin that is only about 3 years old, I doubt I've put more than 200 hours on the tractor since I changed that out. Problem is that the pin is already worn and the drive coupler is already starting to take on the "slotted" wear pattern. I'd like to see, since I'm in there reworking everything, if it's worth the time to put in the QL driveshaft.

Tucker tire won't sell tri-ribs without tubes. I think you will find that 99% run tubes in the tri-ribs...I would and do!!

Dennis, thanks for that info. We got the M-Ta figured out and all put back together Saturday and it looks great. Tyler

Kraig-
Depends on what air pressure you run, if you run them at 100% of max then I'd go tubeless, anything less and I'd tube them. More than a few times have I knocked a bead off the rim in a hard turn, with tubes I wouldn't have had that problem.

Wyatt,

My 169 has the QL front coupler and rag joint to eliminate the drive pin, works fine...but you only have room for one rag joint front & back, not two like some fo the QL's had.

Either way, a good upgrade.

Steve-
Do I just use a gear drive driveshaft with couplers on the ends then? W/O my parts catalog in hand I can't remember, but I do know that when I had ALL gear drives I made up a couple extra that I should still have around.

Thanks I knew I could count on you. I had recalled Denny posting something quite some time ago about tubes being the way to go so I was leaning that way. Now I've fully tipped that way. Tubes it shall be.

KRAIG - I wasn't going to say anything..... I'm BIASED.... ;-)

No wonder WI's a swing state, can't even decide tubes/no tubes

Kraig,
If I remember right, John Lange was running his 122 with tubeless tri-ribs at Travis's last fall and came back from the field with the tire off the rim. He said it was the only tractor he had without tubes and would have tubes in them when he got back home. I have tubes in all the tires that I replace. It is hard to get a good seal when putting new tires on old rims. Even when I cleaned up the rims real good, they would tend to have a slow leak in them.

Wyatt,

I pulled the whole thing out of my 1650 when I decided I didn't want to deal with it's "quirks". The shaft in my 169 is a brand new QL driveshaft (hydro) with QL drive couplers all around.
