Saving it with paint is what's killing you.
Paint is outdated more so than the software on the forum, and adds crap to pics they don't need.
Open explorer and make a folder named pics.
Save the pics to that folder and every time you add a pic, it will go to that folder when you hit the browse button.

HARRY - I agree with you on the 86 & 800's. The K181 8 HP Kohler was an improvment over the K161, 7 HP, but by the time the WF's came out people were realizing that the extra cost for the K241 & larger engines were saved and then some with the cost of rebuilding/replacing the K161's.

The little Kohlers are fine for a lot of things people do with CC's, but running a 38" mower in heavy grass, blowing snow, running a tiller, especially with a GD, they just arn't enough engine. My #72 had a 3-4 yr old K181 replacement engine in it when I got it and I ran it about 3 yrs and rebuilt & installed a tired K241 Dad had. The K181 was getting tired already and back then I had a Quarter acre lot. I could mow for a MONTH on one 5 quart tank of gas.

The 86 & 800 were built to compete with lawn tractors sold by the big hardware store chains. What's funny is the 8 HP CC's are still one of the most trouble-free CC's ever made. The lower HP engines didn't abuse some of the weak spots they had like the big engines, I'm thinking of the spirol rolls pins in the steel driveshaft here. The 7&8 HP tractors never broke the rolls pins, and in the 10&12 Hp tractors they only lasted 5-10 years depending on how you used them.

Speaking of posting pics, Everytime I try to post it comes back and tells me to resize it. How do you resize them. I've never tried to resize them b4,dont know where to start either

Dennis F - I generally agree with you and I was trying really hard to not tell Ryan exactly why but you put it pretty good. You could say the attachments got larger and better and the little engines just couldn't meet their hp need. I was trying to say there weren't many customer needs met by the performance features of the 86 and 800. Others may say these units worked great, some may say fine, and some may say the US was in an hp race and demand back in the 70's so bigger was always better (and littler was sorta worse?). So it just comes down to the 86 and 800 being rare because they just didn't sell that much. In fact the 800 was dropped from the QL series after just a few years. Both tractors still make nice show tractors.

Charlie - have you got any of those rubber grommets I posted about in the thread before this?

I don't know why there's such a problem with resizing pics, but for those looking for quick and dirty and almost always resulting in under 100 K reductions, use Image Resizer from the Codeplex Project. It adds a context menu item to the right mouse button. If you know HOW to find your pictures (many people can't even handle that), all you have to do is navigate to the correct folder, find the picture (or pictures) that need reducing, hover the mouse cursor over the file and press the right mouse button.. you get this menu:

247137.jpg

Select the "Custom" setting to set it at 800 pixels and go. The new file will be placed in the same folder with a tag of "nnn(custom).jpg". Unless you are creating mega size pics in the first place (IIRC, my Nikon at full size will create 15 meg files which are a little difficult to reduce)almost every picture reduces to less than 100K. If you are still above that, try bumping the size down a little (like from 800 wide to 750).....ANd if you're creating mega size pics, LEARN how to take a lesser size pic in the first place - unless you intend on creating wall size posters, a 1.5 megapixel file will look as good as a 15.....

There, now that we've cleared that up, quit complaining about the free website and server space that we get to use, get back to business and "Improvise, Adapt and Overcome !

If you are still running XP, the XP Power Toy "Image Resizer" download is identical to the resizer below, only integrated directly into Windows XP......it's what I use....

Ryan,
Number five on the list would be a 73.........
I'd vote with Shane.

Harry- In reality, whether it was limited production or horrible sales, its still rare. I don't specifically understand what you are questioning about it, or why you would "worry" me. I realize that they were underpowered and did not meet the demands of the consumer.

Since when did rarity go hand in hand with limited production?

Frank- I agree also. I always wondered that. It makes sense with Harry and Dennis F's comments about the smaller hp tractors. They just didn't sell many due to lack of consumer demand.

Not to mention, they're gear drives and who wants those?

Some of my thoughts of rarity and lower horse power or supply and demand. There must have been some demand because IH still built those pesky little low horse power lawn tractors. You know those 382 and other little tractors in both hydro and gear drive. IH must've foolishly thought just as they did by not listening to the farmers and dealers when those two groups asked for a bigger four to five plow farm tractor. However with that said... Some people still bought those little 8 horse Kohler powered garden tractors and must have liked them or they would have all gone to the junk yard many years ago. Personal thoughts is that those pesky little 282 and 382 and other little true lawn tractors were more built to compete with the big hardware stores more so than the model 86.

Myself... I just am proud that Ryan M. was able to complete his collection with finding that Cub Cadet. Not everybody can say that they own four model 169s either.

Ryan Mc - I wasn't trying to worry you. I only wanted to bring to your attention why the units were rare. The 169 is rare due to production limitattion. The 86 and 800 are apparently rare due to sales demand. Hey, and ole Jerry (Nines are wild) makes a good point. I believe IH encountered sales of 9:1 Hydros vs. Gear Drives (I believe it was IH and not CCC). Basically 10% of the tractors were Gear Drive and 90% were Hydros. You guys with Gear Drives have rare units, and if they are 8hp they are really rare units.

Steve - it's not integrated until you install it as a PowerToy app. I've never installed any version of XP except the Enterprise Edition of XP Pro, but I've never seen it installed out of the box on any version I've worked with. The link I provided is to the currently supported version, which does "integrate" - it becomes a right click context option for Explorer. I recommended it as a quick, dirty and simple resizing app for years, including to many of the 50,000 users that my section supported.. There are many more sophisticated tools, for example IrfanView and most of the photo editing apps, but for those who want simple, it can't be beat.....

On the Cub front, I got the K341 home, first discovery (good) is it's late model with alternator - no VR do dink with. The output shaft is bigger than the K321, so the new pulley/clutch drive housing off the 149 won't work, but I don't need the SG pulley any way. I need to find out what the PTO bearing and hub ID is on a 169 - I'll go checking part numbers later to see what's different on a 169.. I can't tell front to back without removing the K321 from the 149, but side to side pan bolt hole dimensions are the same. Got to find the info that Dennis referred to earlier about non Cub blocks.....

Marlin H.- Thank you. Thank you for saying that, and thank you for noticing my desire to simply want to own an 800 without any strings attached. I also want to thank you for expanding my knowledge and desire to own an amazing Cub Cadet collection and for helping me every step through the process. You are a great friend.

Now saying that, Marlin and a handful of others are about the only person I recieve respect from on this forum. Let's face it, I'm only 21 years old, and I'm sure a lot of you think I'm just a dumb kid buying Cub Cadets not knowing anything about them and posting on here taking a stab at helping people out.

In summary, I'm tired of it. I'm tired of the lack of respect just because I am young and everyone thinks they can be-little me because of it. I joined this forum because I wanted to share knowledge about Cub Cadets with fellow collectors, not get ridiculed or insulted because I buy a peice of history or post something in the for sale section. But, I can see that it will probably never change.

Ryan: You fooled me! Thanks for sharing your age. Trust me, I say that with no disrespect whatsoever. I'm feeling old at 63, I'm of the impression that these "old" tractors will end up on the scrap pile if a "newer generation" doesn't put their cel phones away and pay attention to what's really going on around them.

Ryan M. Naw... Im not really too smart msyelf. Over the years of traveling around the sun I've asked an awful lot of questions and observed many things. I've been told by many people that I have one terrific memory... The only thing I truly remember is my latest adaptation/rewriting about my thoughts while sitting on the seat of a Cub Cadet as witnessed below. It's a true quote from a newspaper article in the Quad Cities Times by Bill Wundrum.

As for Cub Cadets... The old ones are the gems no matter what condition they are in. The new ones are like a lot of the toys that I played with as a kid. Played with them too hard or too much and they broke and were eventually thrown away.

Boy it sure seems like there is a awful lot of TENSION around here lately, with people taking jabs and telling people this or that.

No one needs to leave

YOU ALL need some qaulity seat time,,it works for me..

I used the 169 to haul the wagon full of chicken coop clean out stuff to the compost pile out back. And while I did that I pulled the 129 and 149 out into the driveway for some sun and fresh air

Ryan Mc - I don't believe I said anything I would consider disrespectful or belittling. I knew you were young (I don't think I knew you were 21). I've been amazed at your ability to find units, especially the rare ones, and what you've been able to do with them in a short time. I only wanted to help make sure you realized why those units were rare. I don't think I actually saw any posts by others that I'd consider disrespectful. I think some were just telling it like it is. I also believe you actually contribute alot to the Forum and hope you will continue. I no longer have a place to work or store units so for the most part my contributions are from memory. I think you already have more units currently than I ever had in total, which is quite amazing, and you can probably walk outside and get an answer to a question much more readily than many others on here. With regard to respect from others on here, I believe it's more than a handful, which you stated. Many of us poke fun at others, use funny terms, etc. I don't believe it has anything to do with age, young or old, it's all in fun. I like helping people maybe more so than alot of others. I keep my eagle eye peeled for the little things that some may not notice - like that rubber grommet earlier today. It's all part of the fun, and I hope you can understand that. You're way ahead of many people on here.

Hey (under edit) - and while we're at it, most of us on here either fall into Gear Head or Slush Box nuts. So which are you?

Gerry - you're confusing me with your post on the K341. I can understand you don't need the S/G pulley but you do need the basket part of the pulley for the clutch - unless you're going electric. The PTO bearing on a 169 is the same bearing as on a 149, one inch ID. And I'm confused on the oil pan. I'm afraid you may need a different crank shaft before you can use the K341.

wow, thats all I can say. I dont think I* was complaining,I was just asking a honest question on "HOW DO YOU RESIZE A PIC" plain & simple.I never had a problem posting pics in other forums.I do know how to find my pictures when I save them or put them in files, but at the same time I'm not a computer nerd."Is this the best free website" Yes I honestly beleive this is the best place to come for information and to talk about our favorite garden tractor brand. As far as the free part,if you had to pay to become a member ,I'm not sure if I would want to.Guess it depends on how much it is.IDK maybe I'm just a lil more laid back then some, people make mistakes, and if they dont know how to do somthing they ask.We all share the same hobby here,I dont think its a sin if your into other brands of gt's. We all joke around with each other, but somtimes peole can be a lil on the harsh side. just my 2 cents, hope I didnt offend anyone.
