I've done a little digging around and what I've come up w/ so far is that the Stens "Roller" bearing, part# 215-267 has a thin stamped outer housing. The OEM & case/IH bearings, according to the info below are constructed with forged or "machined" hardened much thicker steel. Although some of the reviews I've read from several different sites state that the Stens Roller is a good bearing, others have reported they fail quickly and have slop or a good amount of side to side/up & down play between the inner carriage and outer housing. The Roller from Stens may appear to be a superior type of bearing, but from what I've read so far the design and construction need much improvement. Of course all this is speculative as I have never used the Stens rollers, just my 2cents from the little bit of clicking around and reading I've done....

Seems as inexpensive as bearings are, and only a few bucks difference between the brands my recommendation would definitely be to stick w/ "parts it was born with"

I'm going on a limb(not far out however) that the winch was for a powered or lift assist? Interesting placement.

Funny, I was just considering new bearings as I'm prepping to order the tires. At least I know I'll be sticking with OEM! Thanks Charlie and Jason

Jason:

From your description it sounds like the OEM parts are a better option. If the construction was the same then I would think the roller style bearings would be a better answer. I was thinking about the old days when Chevy went from ball bearing wheel bearing to rollers and the reliability was greatly improved.

Carson, those were my thoughts exactly.... I would imagine the stamped housing rollers would fair much better on maybe the newer style mowers made of aluminum, fiberglass, and plastic,,,, These old heavy cast iron and steel garden tractors could quite possibly explode an inadequate bearing in no time flat!!!

Heck I was just thinking some of these old tractors alone are probably close to 700/800Lbs,,, add a loader w/ a full bucket or a big oLe QA42A packed full of wet snow,

or hang a bunch of weights on the front,,, These little tractors were built tough that's for sure,,,

I know there has been "talk" about improvements, I sure don't recall the bearings ever being mentioned. If it's just a few bucks difference, why chance it, buy oem

On your 149, do know the height inside the engine bay? Like from the base of the frame to the hood, just want to know if I can fit a pre made custom gastank. I dont have my tractors at home since I work on them in school. Thanks

Improvements include tapered roller bearings in trailer hubs, etc......all been done before
