Bill:
Has it been cleaned up or is it still in last operated condition? If the latter, look for leaks and if it looks clean put it in. I'd be more concerned about the linkage than anything - a new set of springs on the trunnion wouldn't be a bad idea, while you've got it out where you can work on it. If it's been all cleaned up before you got it....hmmmm, I'd still be tempted to put it in and operate it before doing a teardown, just to see what IS possibly leaking..

Those 169's are beautiful!
but I digress:
Narrow Frame steering spindle taper pin repair:

#7 taper reamer and taper pin, both carried by McMaster-Carr. The pins come in packs of 10 for $8.13 plus s/h which is reasonable and fast ($5 to me). Washers on top of the spindle help make it really tight (not my original idea, stolen from a former post).

Frank, that washer on top of the spindle may have been my post.

I know I posted about it waaaaaay back in the early days of the forum. I did the fix years before this forum existed.

Kraig: I'm pretty sure it WAS you, also explaining that they helped take some of the up-and-down play out where the taper pin takes the side-to-side play out. Todd Markle posted the Mcmaster-Carr stock numbers on May 2, 2008. I wouldn't have thought of the washers. Gotta luv this SEARCH system!

Have a happy, safe, Thanksgiving!

Frank, I may have to try that taper reamer and larger spirol pin fix for my Cubs. Thanks for passing it along.

but, but, wouldn't using a spirol pin negate the need for a tapered hole?

Frank, isn't that a tapered spirol pin?

I'll have to go have a look at McMaster-Carr.

Under edit: Hmm, just a solid tapered pin, think I'll stick with a larger spirol pin for now.

KRAIG - No, a tapered pin is solid steel like a dowel pin. The taper is what holds it really tight. Pretty common on machine tools, etc.

ALSO, I'm 99% sure WYATT still has His 169. Not as pretty as the two You posted but I've seen it throw dirt off His Brinley plow 5 ft high and ten feet away from the furrow. He also posted pic's of it pulling a full size 1-16" pull-type plow years ago. Amazing what those K-341's can do!

Hey Denny I'm not from Missouri but a picture of that plow throwing dirt five feet would be nice to see. Only time I saw a 169 throw dirt that far was my brothers with a tiller on it.

Denny's right - I pulled a drawing 16" single bottom Allis plow with the thing. Of course it took a LOT of extra weight and the hydro had to cool after every round. I've got pictures somewhere of me doing it, with an IHC pith helmet on to boot!
