Hey - Does anybody have a good idea for getting the hydro shift/ speed lever off of a 129? Other than a BFH? The lever splines or shift rod splines are stripped, so the handle moves without transfering any motion to the rod. The set screw is out and it feels like the handle should just pop off, but no luck. I have tried prying as much as possible with breaking the dash.

If you don't have access to a slide hammer with clamping jaws. Spray it good with PB Blaster, Kroil or something like that for a few days and try wiggling it up and down while holding on to the handle.
It might also be that the spline grooves are buggered up too. If that's the case, a hack saw would be in order.
They can be a PITA sometimes.

Hello, I am new to the site and have one question for now. I have a 1650 that I have owned for several years and the rod broke in it a year ago. I have let it sit but now am wanting to get it up and going again. My question is will any engine from the quitline series fit with no mods? Or are there any other Kohlers that will fit with no mods? I may have found a 1200 with a good engine, will it work? I searched the site but couldn't find any mention of this. I also found a 12hp Kohler from a 129, what are the chances of this working?
I hope I posted this correctly. I couldn't find a way to start a new thread/post.

That must be it, but I can't see how the hubs are held on the spindles.
 
Well, a good evening of cub work was diverted. My wife Becka desided that since the new floor in the baby (girl)'s room looked soo nice the rest of the house should be done. She voted without me and elected me to get the task done.
Back on topic, I got a super nice set of decals for the 128 today. To repeat myself, Thanks, them sponsers deliver top notch products.

Chip T, welcome. First, what caused the rod to brake on the 16hp? I would look into a rebuild on the 16hp. You may not be satisfied with a lower hp, if you are used to the 16. I am not sure of the engine swap from a xx8/xx9 series to a diff series entail's? Stick around, many other's have more info than me!

If we had pics of how it is set up now, it would be easier to figure out what could be done.

The 1200 engine will fit with no mods, others will not. I'd rebuild the 16 h.p. because I agree with Todd, you'll be happier with that if you're used to the 16.
 
Todd, I will save the engine and maybe rebuld it later. For now I just want this running as I plan to use it this summer. To answer your question though, the engine got to where it turned over really slow like something was holding it back but it would always start on the first turn or second. It ran great and performed great, it did this for a year or so. One day I went out to mow and when I tried to start it it wouldn't turn over so I got out the jumpers, I thought the battery had gotten weak. I got it turning but it was slow but it did start. I started backing it out and pop went the rod. I took the spark plug out and turned the engine over and the piston will go up and down about a 1/4- 1/2". I guess the rod is bumping against the piston. All I know is the piston is not seized to the wall. That is as far as I got, never messed with it again. I had a cub lo boy that I used but I had an offer I couldn't refuse on the lo boy so it is gone and now I need this to mow with. With all that being said, what would you think happened to the engine? Can I just put a new rod on and go? If the rod is aluminum on a steel crank what are the odds the crank would be worn or out of round?
 
I have a 1974 1250 hydrostatic cadet. When I turn on the mower deck, I get tremendous vibration from the system and the engine eventually dies. Without the mower deck running, the cadet runs great. Thanks for any help!!!
 
I would check to see that all the pulleys on the mower deck are free, blades are not bent or loose, belts in good shape with no chunks missing, and most importantly, being a quiet line model, check those ISO-mounts that hold the engine to the mounting rails. Mike

Since you didn't mention if it was broken off or just wouldn't take grease.
Those are drive in type. If it's broken off, you have to drill it out and hope for the best and go to the next size larger.
Or you can drill it out and peen the edges a little for a same size replacement.
If it just won't take grease, a little heat seems to help on any I've messed with.
 
thanks Charlie...I had the "not taking grease" problem but think I killed it in trying to remove it. Will get the drill out and see what happens ($1 zert vs the $69 spindle replacement is worth a try)
 
I would like to but a rised exhaust w/ muffler on my 128. First, where can I get a small straight muffler, 1 1/2" dia. As light in weight as possible.
Second, I would like different ideas on supporting it. I am familiar with a bracket from the head bolt to the pipe, but would like some additional support. Will be using just a flange bolted to the exhaust port. Not sure if the one bracket from the head bolt will be enough with the added free weight of the muffler.

Any experiance and advice will be appreciated

Tom K: Just in case, FYI: you can't just replace the spindle shaft on those. They are not repairable. You have to replace the whole ST-745 assembly and at a somewhat higher cost than $69.00.
