Wayne S.
I'm leaning toward a few things from past experiences.
1. Coil
2. Condenser not getting good ground
3. Regulator not getting good ground
4. The PTO switch is flickering on ya.

ok another one on why the book doesn't agree with what i got... this is what the book shows and this is what i got, should be an 86 according to the book...don't matter just wondering if anybody else has come across this. the manual came with the 109 when my in laws got it in '73 i believe... and the 42 bit me and how the heck can ya get this far into it and not pick up til primer....i know i'm not the first on this one....

Thanks Charlie-

When I check spark at the plug it seems to be strong. I'll check the grounds again too. And I have thought about the pto switch and jiggled it several times. When the pto switch has gotten me in the past it kills everything.

BTW, I sent you an email through the store Friday and haven't heard anything. Have you received the heavy duty hood hinges yet???

Wayne, just last week, a neighbor that has a 17hp 782.gave me a hollar. last summer, i installed a rectifier as his tractor was not charging, this time, he was mowing and the tractor while running and mowing was pulling the battery down, it was burying the needle to the C side of the gauge, also the electric clutch was howling, Caleb took on the repair and found the front seal was leaking and had soaked the clutch, and the electric clutch was worn badly, He replaced the seal and put a used clutch on and the tractor now works well, and the charging system has gone back to working properly.
Charlie brings up some good points to check out.
what I'm putting down is some times problems go a little deeper, This is my .02 cents ,Hope it helps you or some one else..

Hi everyone who reads this. I have a 1650 and a 1450 cub cadet. I also have attachments for both. I have a tiller 1A and am looking for tiller tines. I have been looking for them for 2 years now. I have found all the other pieces for this but the tines. Is there a cross reference or another tiller that would be the same? I have a walk behind sears and the tines are the same but the hub is different. I built my own hub and have everything drilled just need 2 left tines and 2 right tines. I am using a set of the tines for temporary, but want to get rid of the walk behind and don't want to part it out. It's worth more than that. I also can't find any tines for the sears. The tines that are on it are 10" long 3" width and the bolt pattern is 3 1/16". Thanks in advance for any answers.

Mike C - welcome to the club. You just discovered IH manuals aren't always "quite" correct. The IH marketing people would sometimes be ahead of the production curve. There also might be an earlier version manual that does show the 10 hp to be like the 8hp, or maybe "some 10hp" to be similar (something like that).

Wayne S - I like the experience that Mike Morgan provided. I'm wondering if your PTO field coil is partially shorting out. I had always heard they were either "good or bad" but heck it's a coil and may be self re-pairing itself depending on how much shaking is going on. When you have a "non-start" episode I'd disconnect that power wire to the field coil at that connector that's about 4 inches from the PTO. If it starts and charges well, you know the problem is the PTO field coil.

Thanks Charlie! Connie did a good job keeping a close eye on that furrow. Finally figured out how to tighten up the lever on it so she'll do even better next time.

Thanks Mick and Harry-

And Harry...it's Mick, not Mike.

I haven't had any problems at all with the electric pto running the tiller. This engine is fairly "tight" and doesn't leak or burn oil to my knowledge.

I guess I'll just get out the ohm meter and start checking every wire cleaning what I can as I go. It seems it would now have to be under the dash.

I'll post what I find but if you don't hear back the tractor might just be at the bottom of the pond. I need this tilling done yesterday!
