KENtuckyKEN, awesome, thanks! Found the info.

For everyone, the engine needs to be degreased. Any advice on a safe method to do this? By safe I mean I'd like to degunk it while still in the frame and not worry about somethig that eats away at other gaskets, etc. I will pull this engine in the winter to rebuild - I just need to get it cleaned up and operational until fall.

Thanks,

-Calvin

Calvin - Super Clean (got mine @ Wal-Mart purple jug in auto section) works good. It'll clean engines all the way to laundry with direction amounts on back. If you use it full strength it'll eat paint and dry the oil out of your skin. I used it when I re-did my compressor (thread in Machine Shop).
I guess parts store carry it now. It's non-flammable.

Is the hood on a 129/149 the same as a hood on a 1450? I had a phone call for a hood and I don`t know if the hood will fit. thanks

Hello once again guys-

I am going through the top of the 109 I just got a month or so ago. I was actually headed for the garden and noticed a little oil around one of the nuts holding the top shield. After removing it (shield) this is what I found.

I also found part of the culprit I thought had been totally removed.

Then I discovered this exhaust leak as well. I knew it had a small leak but it has gotten worse in just a couple of weeks.

I went ahead and removed the head and you can just imagine what it looked like. The engine runs well (or did) so I plan on cleaning the valves, head and all. I need to remove the valves and would like to know if I need some special valve spring compressor or if most auto compressors will work. All I have is one for B&S engines and I'm sure it isn't enough.

I know this engine needs to be gone through but the garden needs it for a short while first. I forgot to mention the head gasket was fine even though a new one will go back in. The two nuts on the studs (next to head) were just finger tight and the rest weren't torqued at all. I could kick myself for not finding this sooner. All I can say now is everyone get out there and check the head bolts on your machines.

Any input about the spring compressor will be greatly appreciated...Wayne

Don-

They are the same stamping, but they aren't interchangeable. The hood latch is completely different on both models.

Thanks Ken. I will have to take them apart and see if they are the same hood.It does look the same. Got my rear blade installed but it will need a few adjustments to work .

Looking at the manual - does the electric PTO assembly require some sport of "puller" tool to remove?, or do you just unbolt it?

I'm still reading through Gary's adventure - but didn't see where/if that was mentioned.

Thanks,

-Calvin
