Matt pretty sure if you are using sodium hydroxide as you electrolyte you will get black oxide.

Art let it evap and dispose of the residue at town haz-mat collection day.

Kraig,
As with the first start of Killer, we'll need a vid of K4K's first run too.
(I have Killers vid on my iPhone hehe!) Since it's nice weather, I expect a little driving around action too.

Man, I gotta get me another O'.

I spotted a 982 in the weeds last night. Can't decide if I should find out about it or not. I didn't get a real good look at it, but it was ROUGH!

MARLIN - Thirty plus yrs ago when I had My Wisdom teeth pulled, My co-workers at IH all told Me to get the "General Anesthetic" as opposed to a local. Nurse gave me the injection and told me to count from 100 to one by "one's". I remember saying "98" and remember thinking "97". Next thing I remeber was a really CUTE Recovery Room Nurse jumping on top of me to hold me down and My Wife sitting in the chair next to Me. Guess I was trying to get up and out of bed! I almost arm wrestled My Wife for the car keys to drive the two miles home. I saw my Buddy's car in the parking lot after I walked out the back door and proceeded to walk back in the front door and say HI to him. He was there to get his stiches out from getting his wisdom teeth out a week before. Several people in the waiting room started getting nervous and ill after seeing Me, My mouth stuffed full of gauze and all the dried blood around my mouth.
I was eating Dorito corn chips 2-3 days later. Good pain pills REALLY help too!

As long as Your care-givers are good there's no problem with "Going Under" Just focus on how good it will feel to walk about and tinker On Cub Cadets without pain.

Keith, I might video the first start. I didn't head to town last night to get gasoline as there is a music festival called Country Splash, or something like that, going on this weekend that started last night. I avoid Somerset like the plague when they have concerts. I did bring one of my gas cans with me to work today, I'll stop on the way home and fill it up. I live 3 miles out of town and I don't drive through Somerset, or even near it on my way to/from work. I think Art is looking forward to K4K being up and running more than I am.

Mike T., thanks for the post on the muffler, looks like it should last a long time. Did it mount OK?

Dennis F. Fancy and the other kitties want me to sign ALL the tractors over to them "just in case." When I was 20 it was overnight in the hospital. Only three impacted, growing sideways wisdom teeth, standard procedure back then. The next morning a very pretty nurse (found out she was our family insurance agent's daughter) came to take me to the operating room. I flirted and kidded with her all the way to the room. The "stuff" was given and I was told count backwards. Just before going under I panicked. I remember thinking... "Waittt...." I came to like I went out... very quickly. I was on my back, in pain, and choking. I heard.... "He's choking on his own blood. Turn him on his side. QUICK!!!"... While turning again I passed out. Since I went home on a Friday that weekend my girlfriend and her roommate and her boyfriend came out to cheer me up. I was told by the Oral Surgeon, "No laughing, No kissing, No heavy food to chew, no.. no.., etc." Long story short... Mix four kids around 20 while playing pool in the basement and just one cup of genuine Irish Coffee (with alcohol of course),having a great time. I ripped out just over half the stiches. Pain pills helped only not that much. I have a pretty high tolerance to pain. One unhappy doctor. Was the weekend worth it? Definitely!!! This time around I think I'll just try and think about counting the days until I can as you say, "Work on the Cub Cadets without pain."

James, are the sticking relief valves you are referring to in a non-running tractor? Often they will stick down in a non-running tractor but will pop back up once the tractor is back up and running. It's also possible that there is dirt and/or rust around the buttons. Clean them off really good and spray them with the penetrating oil like PB Blaster to free them up some. If they are partway up you can carefully grab them with a pliers, but be careful so that you do not ding them up, and pull them up. I know that Richard C. has actually rebuilt some, his posts are #55 and #55a in Charlie's CubFAQ. In the first one he tells how to clean one then he gets into rebuilding one which is WAY more involved. As to the sudden stop, if it was running fine and the engine quit and now will not even turn over, I'd suspect the ignition switch. This might be helpful.

Kraig-
Your (lame) excuse doesn't pan out...

I went through Somerset on my way home from work last night at about 6:00pm and you could barely tell anything was going on.

I think the days of WILD CONCERTS in that town may be over. Of course, I'd be willing to bet that a country music festival/concert draws a slightly different crowd than concerts featuring AC/DC, Meat-Loaf, and Korn..

Art, let me rephrase it then, I avoid going into Somerset whenever possible. Besides, gas is more expensive in Somerset than it is in Stillwater.

Aatay, not sure what I would do with the water afterwards. A good question for sure. I was raised on well water myself and can understand your concern. I live in town now and am on public water and sewer, but after you raised an eyebrow I have to agree with you. I would think that our local waste station would take it. They take old paint, oil, and just about anything else so I would imagine that could go there too. It is something to check out though.

My well at my old house in Sandwich MA was right near Otis Air force base. Major spill of rocket fuel additive occurred many years ago, as well as lead contamination from Camp Edwards firing range had produced one of the largest areas of ground water contaminations around. We had cancer clusters in young children all around our house so we decided to move seeing how we have kids. They can't determine if it is high power missile defense radar or the water causing it but we were not going to sit around and find out. We got our house under agreement and two weeks later the pond 200 yards away tested positive for VOC and we were able to sell our house even with full disclosure of the pollution (pheeeew). I may joke about dumping stuff in the woods but DON'T do dat!

Speaking of Otis and to keep on topic, I will be driving right near there tomorrow pick up a decent shape 104. Maybe it has the extra special glow in the dark paint on it. Will post some pics later.

I got one of the new style mufflers about a couple of months ago for my 129. I do like the way they are constructed compared to the piece of junk knockoff I had before, which lasted only 2 years. Its solidly built, but I can't say it's substantially quieter than the old style, though it seems to put out a purer note, without all the rattles mixed in. Noisier than my Shadow 1100 with stock pipes though.

Matt,

Hope you share the details on how you are doing the zink plating on your bolts. Looks very interesting. Have a bunch of bolts on my 169 rebuild that I would like to use this on as well.

Hello, I'm new to the forum - about a month ago I purchased a Cub Cadet 108 on something of an impulse - I was extremely impressed with how 'heavy duty' the construction is, especially compared to modern machines like my lawn tractor(whose brand I will not mention.
wink.gif
) I've been using the Cub to help landscape at a friend's camp where they've added extensive drainage pipes in the lawn - pulling a York drag rake for hours, a grass seeder, and towing/dragging stuff around.

I am having an issue with the clutch - sometimes it won't disengage - usually after it's been sitting unused for a few days. The clutch is external to the transmission, correct? Is there something I should grease or lube to fix this?

And yes, this tractor will need a lot of TLC to fix some broken bits - the brakes don't work and the parking brake lever is broken. But the clutch issue (and replacing the seat) are my first priorities. Thanks in advance for your help.

Matt Gonitzke, I'm wondering if you will have to chase those bolts. Please let us know. And you get extra credit for only exposing a minimum amount of wire on your conductor side.

Jim...Welcome to the family. Sounds like it sits outside where it's damp ? The clutch can form light rust between the plates and fiber disk, usually a putty knife with some persuasion with a small hammer where the plates meet the disk will pop it loose.

1st batch looks pretty good

Richard P.-

Nope. It puts such a thin layer on you can't even tell when you thread a nut on.

Ron S.-

I'll put up a full writeup after I get the bugs worked out of my setup. I found some vague instructions on the web that told me what chemicals to use for the solution, and gave some instructions for the overall process, but a lot of it is still left up to trial and error.

I now need to make a tumbler to polish them in after they come out of the plating tank...what kind of abrasive should I use? I'm thinking sand. Wire wheeling these bolts to polish them after plating gets old fast...

Well I found a new way to unload non runners right from the trailer.
153383.jpg

Then I found a way to scare'um into running!
153384.jpg

I had a little time this afternoon and decided the 59M needed a place to hang around.
153385.jpg

We made a few stops at garage sales the other day on the way home and found this little guy settin along side the road with a For Sale sign on it.
