So you're not suppose to lubricate the very end of the shaft where it goes into the drive plate. Now I'm a little more confused. I have always made sure the fit was good dry then applied a thin coat of grease. I've always greased under the teaser as well. I've heard NOT to grease under the throwout bearing and what is this powder bushing grease anyway. Is that a fancy name for a graphite type grease? I also don't agree with every little thing these manuals say because when they were written the people involved didn't have forty years of experience to see how things were affected. I would be willing to bet some things would have been changed somewhat; an example would have been the engineering of the teaser spring. They don't last as long as you would expect and are the first thing in the driveline to fail/break (in most cases).

I'm still learning so I wish the experts would post what has worked the best for them through the years.
 
Wayne - Powder = graphite
and that is what the "experts" of the forum decided was best on the pilot.

I don't think it will help though as it wont penetrate the steel so it'll just blow/fall off.

What's the dimensions of the pilot bushing anyway ?
Anybody got a new one kicking around ?
 
Seeing how a clutch pilot bearing is a momentary thing, it's locked up by the clutch most of the time, I just wipe a very thin layer of anti-sieze on the end of the driveshaft before I slide the engine back. It won't fly around like warm grease could and foul the clutch disc.

KEN - I don;t have a new clutch pilot bushing, Would an old one with about 2000 hours of hard usage

Hey KenTUCK - did you miss my message the other day. Didn't you invent a "pin removal tool"??? Please provide the details. i'm tired of driving them out because, you know, sooner or later I'm going to ........

And what's this stuff "if you sit on an SGT you won't go back"???? I had an 1872 with a 60" deck. I did love sitting on it, and cruising around, but then one day I noticed while holding the hydra lift in release it would push the deck into the ground and actually lift the tractor. Thought it was kinda neat at first and then I saw the frame flex where the rockshaft adjusting cam is bolted to the frame. I could see that eventually the frame would crack right there. This doesn't happen on the IH GTs because the frame isn't as wide (tall) as an SGT. I'm sticking with the GTs myself.

A new pilot bushing is a very tight fit on the driveshaft. I can't remember if they are oilite or not, but every time I install one dry, the clutch won't release properly.
 
Yeah I sold 23 the last go-a-round , what of it.

Harry - If you knew what kind of health I'm in now you'd know why I like bigger is better. Power steering is nice too after dislocating both shoulders.

They just showed a bird with only it's head above the oil sludge , I turned it off.
I hope BP rots and damn anyone buying a drop of their gas.
 
Dennis - Do you use copper or aluminum based anti-seize ?

EDIT: Oh and YES Dennis a 2000 hour bushing would be good enough to measure with a ruler , then it'd have the same Q.C. of any China made product

I have an issue with my 129,

The cub was running fine and all the sudden started loosing power until it started backfiring and died. I checked the fuel and oil and started back up and it will run for about 20 seconds.

Now with the air filter off I see it starts fine and runs for around a 15 count then the speed seems to slow down and the governor moves the butterfly valve in the carburetor to open more and the engine then starts spitting fuel out the carburetor and the engine begins to backfire and die.

I have checked the float and lower carburetor all look good. Replaced the fuel line and filter and added new fuel. Checked the points and they are old but look good. None of this helped.

Any ideas where I should go from this point?
