Wyatt, detailed drawings of the spindles help as that seems to be a weak point in the design I made years ago. Thanks to you and Kraig.

Charlie, I haven't been able to follow the forum for some time and forgot how thorough you are. Thanks for taking the time to help.

On to another question. The search for low Original numbers was a hot topic a while ago. What's the latest?

Kraig-
There was a drawing that Dave Kirk did that shows the machining of the hub, so that the spindle can be left 100% stock. It involved machining the hub so that the bearings sat closer together, then making a 1" ID x 1-1/4" OD spacer (where I've just used hard bronze bushings) about 1/2 to 5/8" long, a long set screw, a 1" ID shim and washer to preload the taper roller bearings, and a nylon insert lock nut to retain the components.

The Cyclops front spindles are definitely not weak (though the welds on the bellcranks tend to be). I'll trust the 1" bar stock up to the point of adding a loader.

It works extraordinarily well IMHO.

Hello all. Quick question, I think. Is the trans fluid that Cub Cadet sells the same as Hytrans? I got some Cub Cadet stuff when I bought my 123.

Wyatt, ah, those... er, these:

Doug B: if it is labeled Cub Cadet Hydraulic Transmission Fluid then it is the same as HyTrans (both made by Viscosity Oil Co). If what you have is labeled as Cub Cadet "Drive Fluid", then it is NOT a the same as it is for later MTD made Cub Cadets and should NOT be used in place of HyTrans or Cub Cadet Hydraulic Transmission Fluid.

Hytran vs CC Hydro Transmission Fluid (red label).

They are compatible, but are they identical?

The MSDS for each has some differences in properties and ingredients. The MSDS for each is intentionally vague on composition.

You would likely have to be a current or past knowledgeable employee at Viscosity Oil or have had an oil analysis for composition done to know for sure.

Jim

Jim P: well, I was employed as a parts man for a Cub Cadet Dealer for several years and we had to know the difference. The MSDS data might vary slightly as listed but both are from Viscosity Oil for use in IH made Cub Cadets..... want something actually labeled HyTrans? Go to a Case/IH (CNH) dealer. Again, same stuff from Viscosity Oil... Picking nits ain't gonna change any of that.

Thanks Kraig.

The way I did my spindles was actually to take the material off the back side, but that's because I was using front wheels with a deep offset for a look that I preferred.

And if any of you are out scouring the ag salvage yards for "original headlights", you can pick up some IH or WP headed bolts to top it all off.

Wyatt and Kraig;

The hub & spindle modification and information supporting it comes at the right time.

I have had hubs for awhile and plan on doing my 1200 and also a new to me 982 which has a longer spindle.
Thank you
