Steve S, have you checked the rock shaft and "pickle fork" for wear? Excessive wear can cause lift height issues.

Kraig -- Good point but I don't think that's the problem here. I'll check though...the problem became slightly more noticeable when I switched decks.

Steve S

Does you deck have pin on rear mounts or the spring loaded type? The pin on mounts for a 42 on a 100 are very short compared to later decks. Changed maybe by PO?

Replacement parts 3rd party warehousers often run paint lines to "freshen up" parts before shipment.....anything can happen at that point.

Also remember, MTD makes any other brands with common parts, as well as IH's multi use of parts across product lines......clutch springs could have also been combine belt tension springs for all we know!

Dennis - well here's the thing. The clutch spring was originally being painted yellar by IH when it was used on the narrow frame units along with everything else that was already assembled at the time of the painting (at least I think it was already assembled). Later on for the Quiet Line units I think IH stopped painting the spring since it was being installed after the frame and fender assembly was already painted. I think you mentioned and I basically agree, IH didn't run a paint line for small parts, so my guess remains the clutch spring was originally being supplied in red by the supplier, maybe because it was used for something else at IH as well, we just don't know. I doubt the black parts were being used for something else but with the engine being black it seems to me black makes the most sense for these clutch parts.

Bob, can you please post some pics of your setup with the red spring??

it has caused a stir of thoughts here

Steve B -- My decks are the pin-on cast end type. Interestingly, I have the exact same setup on my 123 but there is a LOT of adjustment room for the lift stop. A very different situation on the 100, though. I'd be in fine shape if the slot on the lift stop was about a half inch longer. Regarding Kraig's earlier point, I may try a different subframe to see if that improves the situation.

I just got done modifing my pickle fork for the wide frame mower lift and it worked out fine.

Once we finish on the spring color debate, can we define where to put the gas cap when fueling a Cub up?

or

(not sure which)...

Gerry, you know that is going to depend on which series gas cap your using and on which tractor
