Did I just get bit by the archive bug? Something ate my pic. Donald, I'll try again...

John,
Got any more photos of that 128?

Have about a mile of gravel road, recently acquired the 128 and QA-42 to help my neighbor clear snow.

John,

I'm no expert on blowing snow...haven't bothered to mount the snow blower in 20 years because we just don't get that much anymore, but I gotta wonder if your need for so much ballast is due to the dual wheels. From what I can make out, I'm guessing you've got 150-200 lbs on each side in the wheels plus whatever that chunk over the hitch weighs. With as much snow as you have in the pictures and with the duals riding outside the path of the snow blower, I suspect that you're not loading the chained tires very well because the outer tires are riding on the snow pile. The overhung load can't be doing the axles any favors.

My setup was a 1282 with 23x10.50 turfs, chains, and an 80 lb weight in each wheel. With the blower raised and no weights, the rear would stay on the ground--just barely. The extra 160 lbs in the wheels gave it plenty of traction, especially when the blower was down in work mode.

Just my $0.02. Maybe you've got some insight that I don't. Maybe you have more hills to deal with than I had.

Jerry

John,
Nice 128. I only got to do my 750ft. driveway with my 128.

Jerry,
From the sound of John's address (the slopes of Mt. Lassen in CA) he's gonna need all the ballast he can get!

Hi Jerry,
I am learning as I go. First try was with single rear wheels and chains with CC 26 pound wheel wights and tubes full of fluid. My problem is the gravel. If I let the thrower skid shoes down to the surface, I pick up too much gravel. But raising the blower takes weight off the back of the tractor and all I got was wheel spin. So then I suspended that 2.5 inch thick hunk of steel from a 5/8 inch rod by eye-bolts. The rod passes through the frame. That helped but still not enough traction. So then I got another set of wheels and ordered spacers from Aaron at xtrememotorworks. Another set of skid steer tires, and made wheel weights for the outside wheels. I have about 580 pounds total ballast counting the fluid. Second set of chains will arrive Thursday. Also I welded on 6" x 12" plates to the stock skid shoes to spread the weight of the snow thrower in the work position. You can see that in the picture. It has been an interesting, but expensive learning curve. Another storm coming in - hope it all works.

Marty - That is a beautiful machine! I've only had mine since October, looking forward to the full restoration. Thinking of naming it, "It Snow Wonder." or maybe "Frost Flinger."
Jerry - I didn't even think of the outer wheels being outside the cleared path. You are right about loading the axles....hummm.

John, the weight makes sense if you're having to carry the blower. Wonder how all the weight work on single wheels? Removing the weight, removing the duals, and reinstalling the weight to find out doesn't look like a small task. Jerry

John, I hate to say it but for snow those duels are killing you! Any weight you can hang on to the rear will do much more good. Can you lower the skids on the blower so that you do not scoop so much gravel? It may require making a set of skids that hold the blower up higher.

It make s me chuckle when I have this idea in my head and then there it is lol. have you tried the shoes out yet, Let me know because I have a 450 on its way and was going to do that very mod on mine.

i worked on my Diesel today and now have to Waite till the hydraulic lines get here for my front and rear ports, The rear will be for a dump trailer and rear lift.I have some 1"x 3 " strapping here and I do plan to make paint booth this time. We hope to paint all the with and yellow at the same time. I will paint all the parts I can get in the movable shed outside and then bring it right back in to dry and harden. I hope to cut down on the mess that way. I found the hvlp gun dose not make much over spray. I love to see pictures of tractors on here . that is were a lot of ideas change hands. all good lol.

Thanks Marty. If I had to guess I probably would have said "Tru-Powers" but there are so many OFF-BRAND tires out there I had to ask!

Speaking of which, has anybody else notice that there just is not much out there for 8.50 AGs anymore!?!?

Thanks for all the info on pulling trailers a few days ago all... I did persue a few that were listed on craigslist, all the smaller/cheaper ones sold to fast. But I did get my hands on a nice 'medium' sized one thats a bit overbuilt it seems, 6x10 inside the rails. Dry weight is about 1400# and even loaded up with maybe 500# or so of cargo the ol' 129 seems to pull it just fine across the yard. I'm using a 2" ball on Xtreme Motorworks ball&pin combo hitch on a sleeve adapter and also one of there extreme hitches the bolts to the diff cover and also wraps around the sides and bolts to the axle housing too. Seems to be a nice stout setup! It rides just a tad low in the front but seems fine the way it is, I could adjust the hitch up just a tad more as well but good enough as is.

Did anybody else catch those tru powers are available in 29 1250 15 and 31 1550 15. I don't have a use for that but those would look cool on a truck.
