I have seen coils years ago short across between the center post and the - post because of a crack , I have sprayed them with a chemical to remove water and then get her home. lol used peanut butter once on a Honda Car lol ,it would sputter a little but worked till she got it to the local garage. Coils take a beating from vibration and weather and shorts. Later Don T

Thanks Kendal, and both coils i have appear to be original coils from the 74&75 era. I just didnt know what would cause them it go other than the things you said. like a short or something. I will check the points, also is there a test for the condenser?
 
ok this one is for you electrical guys... this SG wont turn, i put power to it and nothing, if i give it a good spin it will go about a quarter turn on its own then stop... i took it appart to look at the brushes and there good... everythig else looks to be in good shape as well... whats the deal!
P.S. i know knowthing about electric motors!

I'm guessing either the armature or fields are bad. You can sorta check the field coils yourself, but a shop with the proper diagnostic equipment is going to have to test the armature. Put an ohmmeter across the A and F terminals. IIRC there should be about 4-8 ohms of resistance. Zero or infinite resistance means you've got a bad field coil assembly. Make sure the commutator is nice and clean, or it won't work either, regardless of the condition of the brushes.

Oh, and you're applying power to the A terminal and grounding the case, right? If you're putting it through the F, you just fried the field anyway.

BTW, if you know nothing about electric motors, I would highly recommend reading the starter/generator section in the Kohler manual...
 
yes i went throught the A terminal and ground the case. think im just gonna give it to my neighbor and see what he can do.

Hi,

Curious to know the correct battery compartment sizes for the 70 and 100? My cubs have both smaller and larger ones ... Did IH intend different sizes to be used on the two models or was a modification made sometime during the production run?
 
Hey Charlie, that was three years ago..(and at least it was SOMEPLACE....) and Matt was talking about S/G not running, not V/R adjustment (that was Tim).
