I don't think my ole 100 will be doing much work the rest of this season, he will start and wants to get out and work, but the snow a tad deep

Just a word of advice. Check the side to side play on the sprocket assembly too.
That thing is aluminum and seems to wear a lot.
It might be time for shim washers.

Lip-
I wonder if the wear in the sprocket allows the chain to "clunk" as it goes around it. That could cause it to hammer back and fourth as it gets a load on it...and there's your broken spirol pins.

Either way, I guess it's time for a new sprocket...

ART - Arn't those driven sprokets on the augers of QA 36 & 42's welded on or something? I haven't looked at my QA-36 in so long and I seem to remember it's quite a job to replace that sprocket. The little drive sprocket is fairly easy. BT-DT yrs ago with ALL NEW PARTS, the short little drive sahft shifted sideways, tore out the needle bearings, ate the "H" casting for the chain tensioner. I was really shocked when I went to order parts at my local dealer and he already had everything in stock, new shaft, H casting, sprocket, bearings, even the grease zerks. I paid $90 for the blower back in around 1983-4-5 time frame and that parts run cost me over $150 in about 1992.

Art & Dennis

I know from experience that the rollers in the chain are meant to fit down tight in the sprocket. As the chain gets loose and out of adjustment the rollers will wear the sprocket and the rollers in the chain will catch the teeth on the sprocket and cause it to bind. This will break pins. Chain adjustment and lube is important with any chain sprocket driven tool. its all ways best to replace the chain when replacing the sprocket because the chain could be stretched between the rollers and will wear out the new sprocket faster do to a poor fit.even if one sprocket is replaced, the chain should be replaced to have a proper fit on the new sprocket. Chain is not much $. My .02

My hydro drive acted a little sluggish this morning so I fired up the 70 and threw some snow with it. That little tractor has some real guts. Cleared out 3 drives in 25 min. I would have taken pictures but that's hard to do while removing snow...and the wife would not come out to take a picture of me

. But man was it fun! As soon as I finished I jumped in the hot tub and finished with a hot breakfast and off to work.

Charlie & Art - You're both right.

Charlie, I do have two shim washers on it already, but there's still some side to side play. Do you have those shim washers listed on the CCS website, or should a I phone in the order?

Art, if you recall the picture I posted a couple days ago, the sprocket was worn pretty bad. I kinda wondered if it might just cause more problems. And Don T gave fair warning, too. I'm just debating whether I can get by without replacing the bigger sprocket on the end of the auger. Guess I better tear it out and take a look.

Dennis - I haven't checked yet, but the parts lookup shows the driven sproket as a separate part.

Don T - You're right (again!). The chain is not expensive. On the other hand, the driven sprocket is something like $95 and the "H" casting is around $75! If I decided to replace all the bearings, both sprockets and chain, (and not the "H") it'll be around $250. Of course I got the thrower for $25.00 at a local auction three years ago, so...

Probably no sense being penny wise and pound foolish. Besides, Charlie's bride deserves a really nice Christmas gift just for putting up with him all year, so if I buy more, she gets a nicer gift, right? (Yeah, that's right - I'm a giver!)
Merry Christmas, Mrs Digger!

Terry R., that's a silver/gray 10'x 10' tarp shed where the #2 125 Cub Cadet, garden trailer and the log splitter live. I forget the brand but I can get that tonight as there is a logo printed on the side of it. I bought it at Menard's around the end of the summer of 2009. So far it's held up well.

Matt C., WELCOME!

Guys Its 52deg F here, tee shirt weather for us.I should change my clothes and get kraigs lift bar off for his Original.I don`t know if he is in a rush for it or not,the 62 O is at the back of the storage shed now.If this keeps up I will have to put the mower deck back on because the grass is growing. I`am itching to blow some snow with the 450 and this weather is not helping.Have a great day.

couple questions about the 147. first is the flywheel. everything prevously to the 147 had the smaller kohler flywheel.im installing a k301 in my 147 that originally had a smaller flywheel. does that larger flywheel in anyway add torque? what was the reason for going to the larger flywheel, more power or better cooling or maybe both? it probably would have been possible for IH to install a 14 hp kohler on any of that generation of tractor that was equiped with a k241 or larger. must have had a reason for modifying the frame like they did to accommodate the larger flywheel. the flywheels are all interchangeable from 10-16 hp.

another question is about my lift system. it is an electric lift model. does it have hydraulic assist? the electric motor is attached to a large cylinder that looks like it might be hydraulic, one of those large shock looking things

Don: Get away from that confuser and get what you can get done outside. This ain't gonna last much longer!

Frank: Listen to yourself!

The 147 electric lift has wires that conect to a switch to controll the up and down movement and no hyd help there.

I think the fly wheel adds balance and cooling to the engine .

I hear you lol. but the grass is growing and the pool has no ice in it .

I just had to take a few pictures of my IH snow thrower to see if I could get it running.I think its in good shape to use.Greg L if you lived close I would give you this to use till you could rebuild yours.

But it does suffer a PO mod

ANDREW - I wanted to install a K321 (14 hp) in my CC 72 but there was NO way I was cutting & welding on the frame. I have THREE welders, I can Arc both AC & DC, TIG, MIG, also have a plasma cutter, gas torch set, and a reliable metal cutting bandsaw. I could have but just didn't want to cut up a 38 yr old frame that was in very good shape. So I built a small flywheel K321.

I put the flywheel, blower housing & back plate off the K301 from my 129 onto the K321 and put it back in the 129 where it fit fine. The small flywheel & stuff fit fine into my #72 frame.

The K301 with the big FW went from a good performing engine, engine would accelerate fine from idle to wide open, to a DOG, it labored to gain RPM, still pulled O-K and was a smooth running engine and would hold RPM O-K, but just didn't have the snap to gain RPM like it did before.

Meanwhile the K321 in the 72 gains RPM in the blink of an eye, even when pulling HARD, like when both rear wheels were spinning on smooth slightly rough dry concrete in 2nd gear a quick jab at the throttle brought the rpms right up with snappy authority. I was cautioned to NOT try to mow knee high grass with the small FW K321 on 90 degree days, that it would tend to run warm. But for mowing short sparce grass even in 85 deg temps it's been perfectly fine. And when the temps are in the 60's or low 70's there's no problems.

SO, IMHO the big FW on the K321 & 341 was to increase cooling airflow. Engine performance (acceleration) actually suffers and there really isn't much difference in the amount of the vibration because the big displacement engines are going to vibrate anyhow.

The reason the 147's got the notched frame was so IH/CC could get the 14 hp K321 NOW because the WF tractor's frame tooling was still a ways off from being production ready.

Don, no need to rush getting the lift rod for me. I still need to paint the blade and that isn't going to happen any time soon. I likely wont have the blade ready for it until next fall.

Dennis Frisk
I knew you would help out on that.I have
1a_scratchhead.gif
been asking myself if I took a 147 flywheel and put it on my 129 to see if I would gain less vibration. would the 12 suffer at rpm changes ? thought you might have a thought and I`am
1a_scratchhead.gif
to know what or if its worth the effort.

DONALD - Only reason I'd even think about swapping to the bigger FW would be if you were having over-heating issues after cleaning all the fins, etc. But for normal operation in 70-80 deg. temps, NO, don;t bother. Maybe Richard Christensen out in balmy Arizona could make good use of the added cooling airflow.

And I also want to remind everyone how much cooler their engines are running now even when working HARD running a snow blower. Be nice if Dave Kirk would drop in and post head & oil temps from his Killer Kohler in his Q/L he gave us temps on last summer.

With no way to regulate cooling air flow on these K-series Kohlers it's real easy to get too cool when it's as cold as the pic's showed yesterday.

O-K, an update for Jerry, Steve B, Kraig, etc, I was told by SON Sunday that he's got a couple minutes of video on photobucket of me moving 15-17 inches of snow from three yrs ago. Wife is having problems getting her laptop to send me the video of me cleaning the drive Sunday noon, but we'll work on that. I'm off the PB's site to search for me and my FARMALL again!
