Charlie-
Here's what it read as I started out my driveway this morning.

I didn't dare try to snap another pic while I was rollin along at 55mph (OK, it was really 62 mph, but you get the point...)

Art, technically it wont be winter until a week after tomorrow, on Tuesday December 21st.

Kraig-
Yeah, maybe I should have said the "dead of fall". You'd think it was WINTER after today's forcast:

"Are you ready for some more snow? It's not going to be a huge amount, but anymore snow at this point is probably too much for many people. Clouds are already increasing and some light snow could move in as early as Tuesday afternoon. Right now it looks as though the heaviest snow will be in the southwestern part of the state with 2 to 4 inches possible there. Another heavier area of snow will move in Wednesday afternoon and evening. This area of snow will again affect southwestern Minnesota, but it does look like some snow will move into the Twin Cities as well. Right now it looks like we could end up with a couple inches of snow, but if the track of the storm changes any, we could see significant changes to the amount of snow expected."

Either way, as far as I'm concerned, the 21st is the BEST day of the year. The days only get longer from then on out!

i was thinking of putting new points on my 982 but i read that there is no markings on the fly wheel to static time it. Does anyone know how to time it?

Kraig,
Getting a little off-topic a bit, but maybe not if it's for Cub Cadets. What's the size and brand of that green tent looking thing?

Aint going to get much work done on either of these cubs the rest of the winter,

Looks like its going to be a long winter seeing how it dont officaly start until next week Monday.

Kraig,Art, we are -20 C with the windchill.
I still can not see across the street. We have the horizontal blow.-sideways snowstorm-
All of the local highways and county roads have been shut down today so I didn;t have to go to work.
I need to get a snowthrower for one of the cubs.I'm using a blade on the 4 wheeler and had alot of drifts coming into my lap.
Looks like the lake effect squalls are going to continue into tomorrow evening.

Ge Charlie you look bitchy in that picture lol. Its 50 deg F here and the winds must be hitting gusts to 60 mph. Three hrs in a Dr. office and after the last person left I had to go and find out that they forgot me

Good evening folks,

My name is Matt and I am new to Cubs but not new to collecting tractors. I was directed to this site by another fellow member as a place where I might get some needed opinions and advice.

I recently puchased a Cub Original as I have wanted to add one to the collection for quite some time. Last Wed when it finally made it here to the house, I sent some pictures to a few friends on another forum. Well it turns out that the tractor created quite a stir. There was talk that it could possibly be an original prototype tractor because of the hour meter gauge on the left side of the hood stand. A few folks asked me all kinds of questions and suggested I check all kinds of things. Thus the reason I hope to illicit some experienced opinions on the topic here with you folks.

So here's what I've found so far: In my opinion, the hour meter that is currently in place I don't think is 60's era correct just judging from car projects I've done in the past with old Stewart Warner gauges etc. I would imagine that a correct 60's gauge would have the stainless outer ring like the one above it. HOWEVER, I used a telescoping mirror to inspect the back side of the gauges and there is no sign of trauma to the hood stand (implying the use of a hole saw) or any aftermarket cutting. ALSO the wiring for both gauges have about 3 inches of lead before they disappear nicely into what appears to be the original wire harness cloth wrapping. Based on my visual inspection, the wiring harness appears untouched and unmolested in any way.

The stamped numbers on the trans are 11098, which I was told dates (at least the trans) to June 1961.

So, that's pretty much where I am. I have a bunch of pics and am willing to look at anything to answer questions. What do you think? Is it just a nice Original or is it possibly something more?

Thank you in advance,
Matt

Wow! a nice 13 above here.

Do GT's even run when it's that cold???
I would think the person sitting on one wouldn't "run" that well either....

When it's that cold, you can, and probably will start breaking parts...

Chris it was 8 above 0 today when my 129 went to work cleaning up snow and drifts that where 2 feet deep. The 129 worked for 3hours and almost a tank of gas.
then put it to bed to rest for another day with nothing to fix.

Yes they do run at colder than 35 below.
This was my first go round 2 years ago when we first moved way up north.
The temp that morning was 37 below, luckily with little to no wind!
Thinking real hard about going out the door!

But after a while, I kinda got into pushing some white stuff.

You do not have a prototype but it is definitely a nice cub cadet for sure. I own 11207 which originally was from extreme western PA but now resides in MN.

The prototype Original hourmeters had a rubber isolator collar with three screws, and the tractors had three digit serial numbers starting with 4xx.

I've had them out at around -0- before but not at -20+ below. As far as equipment goes, I know things get pretty stiff at those temps. That and if your tire pressure is a little low, your tires go flat.
Don't ask me how I know that...

Welcome to the forum!

Your Original is a good looking machine, but sorry to say, it's just that.

The hour meter on yours is on the wrong side.
It goes on the other side on the prototypes.

Get rid of that stack muffler, add some fenders and lights and you'll have a WINNER!

Snake oil in the crank case and rear end, coupled with a magnetic heater and it only takes about 30 minutes to warm the ole beast up.

Remember my QA42A with the sheared spirol pin? The one on my 6-string 782? I replaced the sheared pin with a used one and went to work tonight. Whether it was the cold temp (a balmy 1 degree above zero) or the used pin, I now have two sheared pins. Guess I better get an order off for a couple new sprockets and a chain, just like Don T said I should.
