Wilbur, Welcome!

The correct place for your post would be in the "IH Cadet lawn tractors" forum. I'm not sure what year that serial number model 60 was manufactured.

Hey Guys, - Yesterday I was working on a 128 and left the key on for about 30 minutes unknowingly. When I got back to the tractor the coil was hot, too hot to touch. Have I ruined the coil? I haven't gotten the tractor back together to check things out yet. I'm almost scared to. Wayne

Ken F./Kraig McC./ Dennis F.,
Thanks for the clarification on the deck baffle intention and design. I didn't recommend welding it in as that would burn the paint off on the top side. Drilling a hole and running a few bolts thru the deck seemed less work than fixing paint to me.

Wayne S.,
I'd say your points are likely welded together now and allowed current to heat up your coil. I'd suggest you let everything cool down, then check the condition of your points, check the charge of your battery, do a test of the primary and secondary windings of your coil with your Ohm meter. If all checks out, then try restarting it again.

Let us know what you find out,
Good Luck!

ok i was putting a motor back together and and i put the locking collier on the PTO bearing i knew there was a certain way to lock it but couldn't find my manual, i thought i did it right but apparently not because now the PTO slid off and the bearing is stuck inside the PTO and i cant get it out and suggestions on how to get it out and can someone post the directions on the locking collar

Wayne S. I did the same thing last summer, but left it on all nite. My points stayed ok, but as noted check yours. I smoked the coil, engine wouldnt start, and I could see oil on the bottom of the tower that the plug wire goes into. Maybe you got lucky with a shorter time span.

Ryan - Thanks. I know how to check everything you mentioned except the windings. Is there a FAQ for that or can it be simply explained? It's raining now anyway and since most of my shop is outside it might be a while.

Allen - No oil in the tower. I haven't had the time yet to check the points (that are brand new, of course). Thanks to all.

Wayne

Hello,

Was wondering what state got the roundup for 2012? I was at the roundup in Wisconsin and did not go to the meeting... Thanks

Wayne S. (from a post by roland bedell on Sat July 23 2005 @ 02:43pm)
Coil resistance between + and - posts = 4 to 8 ohms
+ to spark tower = 7,000 to 12,000 ohms
No reading from any connector to case. (open circuit)

hay gays I tried to put the heat shield from the 122 on the 125 and the spark plug is in the wrong place. the 122 is a K301AS and the 125 is a K301A is that right. has someone changed the head on the 125 (k301A).

Tim D, On the CC 124 lighting, I put lights on my 124 also, so i kinda remember how it goes; so here we go: There is a whole on the left side of the dash tower, I... think it is in back of the battery box if you are standing on the left side of the tractor. you put the switch in the whole and tighten with the nut. ok...let me look at my manual..wow. theres a lot to try 'ta explain over the computer. do you have an Operator's 72-124 models? if you do, refer to pages 20-21 for the lights and wiring or the parts manual on page 13. It kind of shows and tells you where the wires go. I hope this helps, otherwise talk to some of the other board members.

Thanks Allen (and Roland) - That's first on the list tomorrow.

Tim T,
It's the battery thats makin' your solenoid click.
Trickle charge the old one, and try replacing all the old cable terminal ends in the tractor. I did this on my cadet 124, after i had the same issue with clicks, and it turned over and started right up.

Josh Ott,
Thanks for the tip. Thers is a hole there, and a hole where the cig lighter was where i could place a switch

. And thanks for reminding me about the manual. I gotta dig it out of my file cabinet.

Mike Frade,
I have had a bad experience with Carlisle tires. I bought 2 new ones in 2003, and put them on an older cadet 71, which i no longer have because the engine seized a year later. Within a week after i bought the new fronts, i was driving it, and the sidewall blew out on the LF tire. The same thing happened on my uncle's cadet 104! My 124 has the original Goodyears on the front, and BF G Silvertowns on the rear. I go ridin' through the creek that runs behind my friend's house real fast, and they dont blowout or nothing.

Howard S How are U doin' ? It was great to meet & talk with U and Bill at the RPRU. The 2011 RPRU is at Alberta Lea, MN/ IH Chapter #11... 6/23-25/2011. I think we vote for 2012 RPRU next year.Someone confirm please >..

I believe RedPower Roundup is in Southern Illinois in 2012. Can't remember the name of the town off the top of my head.

Mike M., there are different spec. heads used on the K301 and yes the spark plug is in a different location on the various spec engines, the heads will interchange. Don T. was dealing with this same issue last fall. You can either modify the heat shield or try to locate a correct version. Here's one that I have where the shield was modified by a PO, photo taken after the engine was rebuilt for me by David Kirk.

Oh, this little info from the Kohler Operator's Manual might be slightly helpful.

Wayne S.,

As Allen S indicated, those are the target values for the primary (+ and - terminals) and secondary (+ or - and high tension terminals).
Allen also mentioned checking for any shorts between the case and either winding - Good call, Allen!
