Hello -

I am new here, so I hope I am in the right section of the forum. I searched the archives and could not find an immediate answer to my question.

I recently (three days) became the proud owner of a Cub Cadet 128, with plow, mower deck, and pull behind bagger for what I thought was a more than reasonable price ($300) considering that I purchased it from the original owner and he had every receipt, manual, piece of random paperwork for the garden tractor.

My problem;

I began using it right right away in my backyard, by putting the plow to good work.

Unfortunately, it seems as if the machine is stuck in third gear.

When I think I am in neutral, I am actuall in third. If I shift over to the left (Reverse and First) I can hear distinct clickin like the gear dogs are engaging. Over to the right (2nd & 3rd) I get nothing. The stickshifter just moves freely back and forth with no physical or audible indication that something is taking place in the gearbox.....

Help! This machine is awesome, and I hope I didn't "break" it already!

Also, please excuse me if this post is too lengthy or in the wrong place - I am new here afterall...

Super deal on the 128! This was my first cub too. Something probably came loose or broke, but don't give up, you've got a well-built garden tractor.

Kentuck,
Thanks, that will probably work. Did someone say something about gear dogs?

Your shifter cup in the shifter has broken free and needs to be welded. remove the shifter and you will see that the Cup inside the shifter keeps the stick from moving out of alignment with the two shifting forks.Had that happen on my Original back some time ago Kraig has some pictures to show you if he is here tonight. mine are on my shop confuser.

John Welcome you will get a wealth of info here, to me it sounds like loose shift forks.
you will need to remove the seat/fenders=4 bolts under the battery and 8 bolts on the foot rest, and un hook the voltage regulator next to the battery then the whole seat and fender pan will come off. now remove the bolts holding the shifter, now inspect the forks they should be in the shape of 2 C facing each other. I will try to find a photo and post it.

John use the search bar at top enter shift in search bar and look under 1/28/09 and there is a picture looking into the shifter and at the forks, although if it is the shifter cup you wont see it in that picture.

Wow - thanks for the responses.....

I guess you guys have no lives either; surfing the net on a Saturday Night ! lol

I thought I would have to wait a week to get some feedback.

Anyhow,

The "shifter" = stick stift which attaches to transmisson housing - correct?

I'll will be sure to take a look at the photos...

Also, will I lose any transmission fluid in the process?

Thanks!

John

Kentuck:
Keep watchin' - there IS a reason...(and yes, it is mispelled now - it may even change again...)..

OT -we're headed North, staying overnight in Bobby Bowman's hometown..Almost made it into town, but blew a trailer tire 10 miles out ---- Goodyear Marathon.... weird thing is, I think it was the valve stem - tire was so hot that I had to get my gloves to pick it up to put it on the spare mount...and there was no valve stem left....grrr, I had two of 'em replaced a year ago because they were rotting around the base, where they come through the rim.. Luckily the rim looks OK, I may look around in the morning to see if there's anyplace to get a tire - as mentioned elsewhere recently, these trailer tires seem prone to failure...

Keeping our eyes open for Cubs - I think Bobby has 'em all corralled....

Marty Gwin: I leave for a day and come back to your dog pic?!

After about 2 years of looking, I (err, my Dad actually) ran across an affordable, nice IH-built 682 to put my loader on so I can get it off that %$#! 124.

Here's why it was cheap...this is all that's left of the engine...

Another "Tomorrow I'll finish" day, got help with removing engine, Frank I've picked up a smaller lawn tractor by myself before, bear hugged it, hated myself next morning. Hurt my back 3 years ago and can't do anything about it. I've decided that with the engine out I'll finally do the super steer upgrade to the 1200, I've had the donor parts for two years now. Room mate and myself figured out there's too much grass, gonna plant some corn out back, better hurry up and finish!

Matt,
What's wrong with your 124 that you have bad words for it?
