That pic looks too good. Here's a before pic. This could be a pleasant 2 hour job if everything went right. Does that ever happen??

Evidently the head gasket couldn't handle all the compression. That's a joke. I like to play with my old torque wrench, and these head bolts untorqued anywhere's from 10 to 35 ftlbs. I'm guessing the headgasket was replaced without the use of a torque wrench or not retorqued. Anyway, she's got a STD piston in her and by this time tomorrow I'll know how warped the head is. So will you.

i am wrong on my thinking ? the hood tab that i am talking about is the one that is the one spot welded to the hood not the one on the tower? but i am stupid sometimes. keep up the great work all of you guys. and thanks charlie you are great

I try so hard to stay on topic, but I know it's been a slow day here, and since it's you: WE'VE HAD RECORD HIGH TEMPS IN NORTHERN MAINE FOR THE LAST COUPLE DAYS! About like our governmental situation -- too much too fast. Boy am I gonna get poofed. I've worn long john's (winter underwear, for the unitiated) since November (not the same pair, like back in the OLD days). It's nice to change out of them on Easter (now I'm political AND getting into relgion). You should read this and poof it. Meeting Don T. at the BORDER, hopefully at 1 pm tomorrow. That might become a new story. So, should my valves rotate???

About the only way other than another hood would be to just make another one and attach it to the broken one if there's enough of it let to do so.
Or you could make another one and have it welded in place or if you wouldn't mind the look, pop rivet it to the hood.

FRANK C. - I AIN'T gonna comment on what You & Charlie were talkin' about.....sounds like a personal subject to me!

Depending on what type of torque wrench you have you shouldn't loosen stuff with a torque wrench. Most if not ALAL "Click stop" torque wrenches like Craftsman Digi-torqes are not supposed to be used to loosen stuff. It knocks them out of calibration much quicker. The bending beam style can be used that way.

And the other question....valves should "Rotate" if they have rotator retianers on them. Some Kohlers do, some don't. My K321 had them on both intake & exh, my K241 didn't have any, and most K161/181's don;t have them either. Maybe Paul B. or Myron can explain if there's some way to pull that info out of the spec number. Anyhow, if the valves rotate, it would be very slowly, like 1/1000th of a revolution per crankshaft revolution, which would be about 3-1/2 rpm @ wide open.

Dennis: Thanks. Torque wrench is bending beam style. Now that you've mentioned it though, I think I'll check it against a clicker. Also going to go further and check for valve rotators, and am betting they're not there. That means I'll probably be looking for a pair because I think valves should rotate.
Anybody seen Don T.? Oh, there he is ---

In spite of all our planning on how to get his stuff across the border to him I just realized I don't know if we're to meet at 1PM his time or my time.

Uhhhh Dennis:
So why do the clicker style torque wrenches have ratchet heads - for torquing left hand head bolts?? I've got one that's better than 50 years old (overpriced Snap-On IIRC

) that still matches up with a beam type - I've checked - and I've used it for a ratchet (loosening bolts) forever - it came from Dad's tool box before I had it.

Frank has turned into a "Mule" for Don
