Kraig, You will even like the spring assist with the mower deck. I mow a lot off lawn, and lift the deck momentarily to clear some rough spots I set the spring so that the deck stays down on its own, hardly requires any effort to hold it up for a few feet/yards.

Timothy T. If you have 8.50 rear tires, the tractor is under 36" wide. If your 147 has 10.50 tires, like mine does, it is over 36" wide and the rear tires will run in the "unplowed" snow and knock it down into the just cleared path. If so, you will be a lot happier with a "42". 36 and 42 are the...

Chad, change the Hydro/transaxle oil and filter,if you haven't already. You will need a differential rear cover gasket, oil filter, oil and a large diameter drain pan (can get sort of messy the first time you do it. Obtain/down load a copy of the operators manual, fluid capacities,lubrication...

Tim, The starter/generator is only rated at 15 amps and with a DC gen you have to rev it up to get that. Is the amp meter a 30 amp or some are up to 60 amp? The greater the range the less movement. Remember the dash ammeter is not test instrument grade, but is a general indication only. If the...

I have a windbreaker cab (that I have never used)that was on an early wide frame, that appears that you need to drill holes in the tops of the fenders to install it. The tractor it was used on had holes drilled in the top of the fenders. I was going to use it on my 126/147,but will probably not.

Todd, The 10.50 tires were an option,my 147 was unrestored when I got it and appears to have always had the bigger tires. You will need extra weight on the rear. The box under the seat on my 126/147 does not contain the battery as later ones do,I fill it with log chains, have one set of factory...

Todd, I have used my QA42 on both my 126 and 147. You need a creeper on a gear drive to go slow enough. Both tractors have plenty of power for the snow thrower, its a question of how fast the machines can "digest" heavier snow. What size rear tires do you have? My 147 with 10.50 tires is over 36...

Jimmy, When I bought my 147 the PO said it ran but when I went to look at it,it wouldn't start we tinkered with it,but no start. I offered him less and he took it. When I got it home I couldn't figure out what was wrong, there was a new spark plug in it that fired when out of the engine,getting...

resistor bypass: I recently converted a Farmall 300 to 12 volt and used an external resistor on the original 6V coil. Hard starting was sometimes experienced,so I went to Radio shack and got a small relay and created a resistor bypass circuit. Now it fires up easily everytime.

Jeff Baker, Most of the cylinder wear in the Kohlers I o'hauled was at the bottom of the stroke. Piston will need to be removed to see for sure. Looks like the head nuts stayed on several of the head studs,be sure to get the head nuts off the studs and put them back in the block before you put...

Bill Z. Most/all automotive regulators have three "units" inside,Cubs have only two. I don't think your starter/gen would like that. Cub regulators are square and the automotive ones are rectangular to accomodate the third unit. If your tractor still has the original rubber and fabric covered...

    Farmall Regular paint colors

When I was a kid in the 50s I never saw one that was still grey. There were a lot of that generation still in daily use. I remember the local dealership having posters/signs promoting paint jobs and a walled in stall in the shop where they painted them. We had a 1941 "H" that I remember we took...

Another reason to operate at full throttle is that most/all engine driven attachments were designed to operate at full engine speed for maximun efficiency of that attachment. My operators manual for the mower deck specifies full engine speed when mowing.

Craig, The gear teeth on the crankshaft are most likely damaged/ruined. Pull the engine and pull the pan for a good look. Engine is possibly beyond economical repair unless you have a bunch of spare parts.

    Torque wrench

I agree with Dennis about bending beam torque wrenches. I still use mine that I bought 40+ yrs ago. As long as the pointer is on zero when the tool is at rest it should be accurate. They do/did come in all common torque ranges and a used one will probably be as accurate as a new one. One thing...

Kraig, Are the nuts top and bottom the same? Are they full thickness or the thin type, coarse or fine thread? If the nut in question is the thin type some modern 1/2 impact wrenches can produce 300-400 ftlbs or more of torque, which at the full power setting can get you in trouble pretty quickly...

Paul Reed, If you have never used an impact wrench:verify the direction the wrench is set to turn before applying to the nut,be aware of the torque rating of the gun, especially if you consider using it to tighten the nut to avoid stripping the threads. 3/8" guns are not usually powerful enough...
