Maybe it's an Indiana thing, I had a deck mount on my O-turn break last week and dropped that deck right onto the ground!
Oh yeah, nothing can get under your skin quicker than a broken pull rope!
That's too funny that you said "when it rains it pours". After I dropped the deck I went and got a Simplicity I have to finish the yard. I managed to catch the bagger on a rope ladder my grandkids play with. It stopped the tractor dead in it's tracks and bent the crap out of things. After I was done mowing I drug my IH chipper into the garden and managed to seize the shaft on that! All in about an hours time...geeeez
Looks like you have a nice garage to be working out of. That's makes things much easier.Had to be on the road for 3 days last week for work, so I'm a little behind schedule. I got the mower deck welded up and put back on last night. Wife is happy to be mowing again.

My latest project for the last couple days was replacing the engine in the Huskee Log splitter. I have been worried about the old B&S because it has been starting harder and harder as time goes. Well I finally had enough. Harbor Freight sells these replacement engines that is supposed to be a direct replacement for the B&S. Well I got the old engine off and the new one mounted with very little effort. Then I got to looking and the engine is really for a mower set up and not a log splitter. So now I have to rig up a throttle cable and a safety break (motor kill) cable like a mower would have. Thankfully throughout the years of Cub Cadet collecting I had some old cables stashed away that I modified to fit nicely. So basically the new motor was less than $300. I do have a small hydraulic leak that I need to track down, but at least I'm back up splitting wood.

Shultze, A few yrs ago I did the same.The larger 196 engine had all hand controls on the side like a briggs.I've put MANY hrs on it ,it has worked super.Every time I use it I turn fuel off and let it run out.Always starts within 2 pulls with choke on...

These Husky Splitters are made by a company called Speeco. Aside from the paint job the Husky, the Countyline, and a few others are identical.
Can you make up small brackets and linkage to keep the throttle on the engine? With logs bouncing around, cables wouldnt be optimum.

Yeah, I thought about that, but I think it will be OK. I do set a partial log there now and then but I'll just be aware that they are there. Usually for me the logs go dropping off the other side.

I didnt realize you already made the cable bracket. Looking at your last picture, your knee will protect those nice shorty cables. You'll be fine.

I have one the larger predator horizontal shaft engines on my Mighty Mac chipper. So far so good. A few observations/pointers you may find useful:
Change the oil more frequently than the break in procedure says to initially. I changed it after the initial run in and then again at 6 or so hours. Oil was really sparkly initially.
Mine had a "Bosch" sparkplug from the factory that looked counterfeit, and the heat range was different than the Honda it is a clone of. Had a goofy miss that went away after I replaced it with a new NGK plug that was correct for the Honda.
The air filters these come with are total crap, to put it nicely, and they are hard to find for the 302cc at least. Ended up slightly modifying a Honda Air cleaner assembly to fit so I can use Honda Air filters. They are of course not interchangeable...
