LT1018 slow cranking on start

My LT1018 cranks very slowly when attempting to start - one rotation per second. If I remove the spark plug the engine turns over normally. I have fitted a new battery and spark plug. There is a fuel supply and the spark is strong too. The previous owner had given up and asked me to take it off his hands. Very generous these Australians!
 
One common issue with these is that the battery cables are very small diameter for the application. (Save $$ on the cost of manufacturing but create problems in the field, not smart!)

While you did not state which engine you have in your LT1018, the cable problem applies to all. The suggested "fix" is to run a heavier ground cable from the battery directly to the engine block, not to the frame {reason}: no matter how well the cable is fastened to the frame, remember that the engine is bolted to the painted frame thus partially insulated.

Doing this has shown to vastly improve cranking speed.

If a Kohler Courage single, could also be a faulty starter (somewhat common) or a partially sheared (called "indented") flywheel key (also somewhat common on pre-2008 engines). Finally it may need valve lash reset.(critical)
 
Jim,thanks for the information. I will get that done next week when I am back in my own workshop. The engine is a B&S ELS500 18.5hp. Will post how it goes
