I can't believe the seat of pants power from the 12hp to 14hp in the 1408 Plow Special. I really want a 25hp Command for a '82 series gear drive plow tractor now, but the $1400 seems to be a problem with the wife. . .since it will mainly get used to plow!

RYAN - Northern's last catalog had a 24 HP Honda V-twin for less than $1100. I thought that was a lot of HP for the $$.

Don,
I have a friend that is thinking about using a K-361 Kohler 18hp OHV single cylinder for a stock puller. Any pro's or con's he (we) should know about? This engine will be mainly bone stock and will be limited to 4000rpms. Might do a little port and valve work but very minor. Shoot me the straight stuff because we can always use a K-341 instead if this engine is a "dud". I would want to know any downside prior to purchasing or installing one into the tractor. Is there a (real) advantage in hp of this engine over the 16hp flattie in a stock configuration. OR should we not worry about it and go with a K-341 right off the bat?

Buddy if mine, bud brummett, Machined a entire motor with a turbo charger on it.

He has ran it, but never pulled with it.

There was a scale 1206 made from a Wide Frame Cub Cadet, probably a 129 with a turbo-charged Kohler at RPRU in Penfield a year ago. They even went as far as to put a small oil pump belt driven from the crankshaft to lubricate the turbo. I never saw it run but Friends I know Who have say the one cyl. exhaust really doesn't provide for much boost. Kinda like people who put raincaps on their Cubs then take them off because they clap open & closed at anything short of wide open. BT-DT

Greg E,
Look back through the archives. The K361 was discussed a couple pages back.

for stock class pulling they are pretty nice . the stock heads don't flow anything . the rocker arms & pedastal are garbage when you take the gov. off . you have to be careful when putting a cam in . to high of lift & you screw the rocker angles off & you can't keep guides in them . you can shave the head down some to up the compression , advance the cam & ign. timing & they do put out some nice hp.in stock form with a gov.

Thanks Don. It sounds like I should still maybe stick with a K-341 Kohler 16 hp flathead just to make sure the reliability is there even in the stock class. I don't want to deal with the valve seats falling out or the guides wearing out prematurely. I have heard parts are getting scarce, too.

I just bought barely used 2 sets of dick cepek giant pullers tires and real racing aluminum rims and douglas aluminum rims to put on my two pulling cubs.I cant wait to try them out but I tell you one thing they were expensive as can be woooooo we they were.So anyone out there that has some cepeks could tell me how many pounds do you usually put in them? Thanks for any input.

Jonah . if you want expensive . we have 8 sets of Cepeks on rims & 2 sets of Lawn Tecs on rims with 1 more set coming on rims . Mmmmmmm thats $6300 in tires & rims sitting in my Garage & trailer. I should cut back! I know Julians tire selection that he carries is bigger than ours is.

the LawnTecs looked good in Kewanee Il. over the weekend. Harrison Stahl won the outlaw class with his stock altered & Jim Vogt won the Super Stock class with Julian Stahl Jr. 2nd & 4th . . they all had LawnTecs on.

Don V.
What tire would you use to pull in Stock/Altered?
Usually on fairly loose tracks.

I guess the popular choice would be the old original big bar cepeks , they are no longer available . they seam to work very well is SA. The V cut cepeks have not proven very much in the SA class. the LawnTecs seam to be better than the V cut cepeks for that class. Nichols Performance is reproducing the big bar cepek but through a different manufacturer than the original ones. the side walss are not made the same so the SA guys have not been running them.

Don V!
I appreciate your answer especially since you sell both Lawntecs and Cepecs.
Do you have an opinion on Firestone Floatation 2's?

the Firestone is the best tire out there if your club does not allow the professional pulling tires like the Cepek , LawnTec or Pitbull

I have couple questions mainly directed at Don or David, but anyone feel free to chime in.
I'm working on my new 149s engine. I have it torn down ready for boring and crank turning. I posted before that it will be a worker/plowday tractor,
But I'm hot rodding it. I will be running stock RPMs.
I already built a K301 in a 123 and am pleased with it. My 1st question is on the head. I have the 149 head with the spark plug above the exhaust valve, and a 10hp head with the plug between the valves. I can mill either one for more compression. I know the 10 head will have higher comp. My question is, is the better plug location a fair trade off for less compression? In other words, which head should I use? My 2nd question is on the cam. I used a vogel .223 grind
in the K301. I got that cam used for $40. I got on vogel's website and his price to grind one is
$93. I'm also looking at the K361 cam and the one
David mentioned that came from Madsen's. I guess I'm asking which cam will give me the best bang for the buck? I'm going to do everything else that I did to the K301-mild port job, 3 angle valve job, partial relief-basically folling David's buildup.
