another thing you can play with is welding in your cyl. head chamber & reshaping it. don't do this unless you know what your doing & have a few heads to play with

Just purchased a borig bar and related tools. Want to use on some of my kohlers. Do I need to build me a bench or can I use an oversize plate bolted to the block with a large enough hole like the plates we use on racing engines to bore and hone and secure the boring bar to it?

I took my brother Tom and my nephew William to the PD2.That is the eastern plow day.
The format is to plow in the morning and plow or pull in the afternoon.
Being ex drag racers we thought pulling would be fun.
We took 2 tractors.A 72 and an 1100.The 72 to pull and the 1100 to plow.I know that the 1100 is probably OT.But,the idea was to see if it would break.It didn't.
We loaded the tires on both tractors,added a bit of weight here and there so that they weighed around 850-900 lbs,Gave them a tune up.Removed the governors and used a throttle stop to limit RPM to 4000 and put in some Sonoco 260.
The results were far beyond expectations.
Now my nephew thinks we should have a puller and we all agree.He's 18 BTW.
We want something that's fairly stock appearing but could go a little radical on the engine.
We would like to use a NF.
This would be something we would use three or four times a year.We would limit ourselves to informal events such as plow day and a couple of NGTPA meets in the North East.
What should we build?

John, You prolly didn't do yourselves and favors by limiting your throttle to 4000. The only way to limit the RPM with a throttle stop is to keep the throttle blade closed down and limit airflow. With a working govenor it will pull the throttle open all the way when it needs to. You can increase the engine RPM's with the throttle cable and still use the govenor. Just a thought.

Sorry for running late on the topics...
I see that the Carter #26 carb came on the K301. The carb I have is a Carter Model N with a 26 molded on the inside. I take it that it is a varation on the carb in Davids picture. If so is the venturi the bottom hole on the intake side?

I am planning on doing a "Killer Kohler" job on the K301 in my sons 123. It will be a while till I can afford some of the machine work, but the little things like the carb mod and block cleaning and such I can start on now. Along with cleaning the entire tractor and Hydro (externaly) unit.
 
Frank I'd find a way to support the boring bar so it don't rest on the engine.

John , Dave's correct . you hurt yourself far more than you helped yourself. disconecting the gov. & limiting the throttle to achieve a set RPM does not allow the carb to open as load come on. set the throttle stop to raise your rpms with the gov. . also dumping race gas in a kohler is a major lose of power & torque.these engines in stock form don't have enough compression to make use of it. you make your most power when you are close to detonation as possible without detonating. so in a kohler the low octane reguler gas.

Tedd the model N is the early version kohler carb.

I have an “in theory” vs. practicality question. In general flywheel weight is a good thing right? I’m not sure what a stock flywheel for a K341 weighs, but I do know Midwest has the 25# ones, and from what I've heard they are the preferred weight. The Midwest flywheels don’t have the cooling fins though so they don’t really lend them selves to a plowing/pulling tractor. They also don’t have the magnets underneath for the stator if I was to use a ring gear starter. I then had the thought “in theory, you want the rotating mass, so why not just put it on the other end of the crank.” I could have a weight made that would go on the PTO end of the crank and it and the stock flywheel would weigh about 25#. I was talking to a friend about this and he pointed out that in practicality that is not the best place for the weight. He said it would put a lot more stress on the journal of the crank, which is a week point to start with. Would it really be that much more stress than running an implement off that end of the crank? Any other thoughts, pros, cons? Thanks.

FWIW, the stock flywheel from my 169 weighs 23lbs.

Hello everyone, I've got a question about trying to squeeze some more power out of a kubota D-600. I'm working on putting D600 into a certain tractor but considering that its only 16hp. from the factory I was wondering if there are any ways that anyone knows of to get some more power out of it? Is there some adjustment that could be done to the injection pump? Also (just curious about this) does anyone know the how much torque this engine puts out? I've been messing with diesels for a few years and have taken injection pumps apart from a D600 so as long as it isn't anything extremely major then I'd like to hear about any mods that would increase its power. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Tim the flywheel weight is critical depending on what type of engine you are building. the SA type engine the 25 lb wheel is a good choice. its surprising how much a flywheel affect can change torque & HP numbers. if you have the small cub type flywheel common to the narrow frames & 10 & 12 hp's in the 129,128,108, ect the larger ring gear wheel is a improvement. adding weight to the pto end you'll want to be carefull so you don't break a crank. I've put 10- 12 lbs on with no problems.

Don, I’m planning on using a larger flywheel with the ring gear starter. I will most likely use a K361 cam. I was planning on using a stock crank, unless I’m told I should use a steel one. And I don’t think I’ll run more than 3800 RPM. Would a 5-10# weight on the PTO end be a benefit to me? Would it be better if the weight were thick with a small diameter, or thin with a larger diameter? Or doesn’t it matter? Thanks for your advice.
 
Tim the best style in my opinion (there are many different thoughts on this) is to try to have the bulk of the weight as far out as possible but still make the center strong enough to not allow for flexing or drifting. putting some weight on the PTO is OK . I used to ave a 10 lb starter pully on my stocker. when guys would ask why I always said in case the starter takes a dump I can start it off my starter cart that I use on the pro stock. but it was really added weight. a castc crank is usualy ok till you start to get into the upper 20's to 30 hp range. after that they become a problem. not to say you can't break one in a lower hp stocker. I did.

Jonah up untill Tuesday there were only 2 sets in exsitance , I just got 4 sets yesterday. there has been alot of testing & on many tracks have shown great promise some tracks they have not looked good. I don't think theres enough out there yet to say they are better than another since there could have been gearing or balence issues for the bad runs. time will tell.
 
Guess I will try the engine pros. I wound up with a "free" 149. Does not run. Have cleaned out carb, Ajusted as per books. Replaced points gapped to .020 New plug and wire, gapped to .035. ajusted valves to book. Damn thing still will not run. Strange part is that motor turns over quite a bit faster when the choke is pulled out.
Only thing I can find with wear is the main gas needle. It has been turned doun way to hard before and the taper is crimped in a bit. Does this tend to spoil the seating surface as well as the needle?
Now it will bark a bit and blows black smoke, getting closer but will still will not run.
Folks that ouned it sent it away before spending money on a old mower!

Stuck exhaust valve? Pop out the spark plug and tap the valve down with a socket extension, it might be worth a shot.
