I'm sure people have...some may have gotten away with it. If you are anywhere but the middle of the wear tolerance range, you have no idea what you really have though...
 
A micrometer is the only perfect way to go to know exactly. I realize most people don't have them,or in that size. If there is an engine shop or machine shop, maybe even a Napa close by you can could probably take it in and get a measurement
 
If you want to use those to read the piston od top and bottom. it'll be okay to get an idea of the wear.
but don't use them to measure and fit to the bore.
