I was cutting the grass this past weekend and approx 1/2 hour into cutting the grass the mower would lose power and stall out, I had to choke it to get it started just to limp to an area to work on. Has brand new plugs, fuel filter and air filter. New to the forum and to the Cub Cadet troubleshooting. Any words of encouragement? What should I look for next? Noticed the stalling last week but was able to finish cutting thought it was a fluke but apparently it is not.

Could be your gas tank is not venting. Try cracking the gas cap and running the tractor. Also, check your fuel filters.

I replaced the fuel filter yesterday, I notice you said filters are there more than one? Also when I disconnected the old fuel filter to replace I heard the fuel tank bubbling which would tell me the gas tank is not venting. Where is the gas tank vent located? The vent must be clogged why else would the gas tank bubble. Appreciate the information I will check the vent once I know where to look when I get home and let you know what the outcome is. Thanks again - David

Should be.

Yes there are more than one type fuel filter. There are the gravity type that free flow fuel and then the type for use with a fuel pump that won't free flow. You need to use what your tractor was designed for.

David: According to Parts Lookup, you should have one (1) filter in your fuel system, P/N BS-691035 as well as a fuel solenoid P/N BS-692094 (Replaces Part Number BS-807664). The gas cap is P/N 951-3124E described as "CAP-FUEL 3.5" MAX 10% W/O." It is hard to tell from the drawing if it is vented or not. The filter does not appear to be very far from the gas tank.

Your filter probably looks like the one in the drawing above, it is given as P/N BS-493629. A picture of replacement P/N BS-692094:

Good luck.

2160 would definitely have a vented fuel cap. Another cause may be a sticky valve, not uncommon with these when the engine is warm. Fuel deposits on the valve stems can cause that condition. Try adding a good dose of Sea-Foam to your fuel to see if that helps. Better yet, drain that tank and refill with a gasoline that does not contain ethanol, the pumps are labeled accordingly. Usually that requires premium fuel. Still run some Sea Foam to remove those deposits.

Thanks all for all of the help. As I said in one of my earlier posts, I replaced the fuel filter but once Bill Jamison mentioned that my gas tank might not be venting, I was almost sure that was it. Long story short I loosened up the gas cap and was able to finish cutting the grass (1 1/2 hours of running with NO issues) All fixed. Over the 15 years of owning and running the CC I don't remember ever having this problem. How can a gas cap go bad and not vent? Thanks

David L.
You ask how a cap can go bad.

Just like you and I, when you get old, things get floppy and tend to sag. It's just the way things are, LOL

Plus, mowing is a dusty operation and dust gets into the vent plugging them up.
