I found out the body of the regulator is grounded by using a meter. I was looking at the wiring diagram and noticed the regulator is wired into the ignition switch. So following the wires I figured that maybe the ignition switch is bad. It seems like when the key is in the ON position that internally it must make contact between the terminals of A and B. I made a jumper wire going to the regulator conector to the tractor voltmeter. And what do you know it shows charge. I then put a jumper wire in the wire harness conector between the A and B terminals behind the ignition switch. It showed charge again on the tractor volt meter! So I was wondering does this sound right that the ignition switch is bad and that A and B need to make contact once the engine is running? Or am I missing something else here?

I do want to mention though the hour meter does work when the key is on..... Strange?

Charlie,
I am not very good at the search section. What did you type in to find this? I typed Haban sickle mower (and other combinations) in and didn't get much of anything.

Morning Marty! Dennis...just seems bad that there was such a short life to this engine. I went this way so that there would be NO issues for a long time to come. Should have been 10-15 years before any large trouble would show up.

Maybe this will wake you sleepy heads up:
Picked this up yesterday evening:
Can you guess what this is by the first pic?

Not sure about the extra parts in the floor, but he gave them to me anyway.

JERRY B. - How many years or hours on this engine since the last rebuild?

Some engines run longer than others. My old K241 I mentioned ran well right up till SON & I pulled it apart to see what kind of shape it was in. I had 1400 hours on a "Cheapy rebuild", all new gaskets & rings, but didn't grind the crank and knurled the piston. The head was warped REALLY bad, the shop that did the machine work planed it for me and the head gasket never blew in those 1400 hours, but I did re-torque the head a couple times. If I just did light jobs the engine would burn a bit of oil, say about 3/16" down on the dipstick after 3-4 hours of running. But if I pulled the engine pretty hard oil consumption dropped to almost nothing. I ran it about 12-14 hours STRAIGHT without shutting it down pulling my lawn vac and the oil only dropped about 1/8" on the dipstick.

The K301 I rebuilt for the 129 I did a rebore, ground the crank, all the new seals & gaskets and while it ran good, it never seemed to run quite as well as the K241.

Engine break-in procedure is important also. It seems kinda harsh, but you need to run the new engine hard, build heat, then let it cool for a few minutes, then run it hard again.

Good afternoon all! Long time lurker, infrequent poster. I recently acquired a spring assist for my 104. Are there any tricks/tips/secrets to installing and adjusting one of these? I have the picture that Kraig posted a while ago of one installed and checked Charlie's manual page but couldn't find anything.
Thanks

Rob Fuller, I agree you probabily need a new switch assembly. The little graph at the bottom of the schematic says that A+B are connected at 'run' position. The hour meter will alway work when the motor running since it is tied to the alternator at the 'A' terminal at the ignition switch.

Allen S.,
I typed in haban mower and got only 6. I typed in haban and got about 32.
What is the difference between the model 402A, 402D, etc.? Were they made in different years?

Marty G. I tried again and still got 64 hits, but you got a bunch so you've probabily got most of the info.
The Search secret seems to be to change 'Keyword options' from OR to AND.
Change 'Match method" from 'parts of words' to 'whole words only'.
I dont know anything about the models, but reading the Forum over the years indicates a limited amount of info on that unit. You might have to wait till Monday for 'full staff' to get more data. A.

149 refurbish is down to bare bones.

Very rusty on one side and coated with hy-tran on the other. That pesky cork gasket was the problem.

Got the frame soaking in biodegradable stuff and a power wash tomorrow.

Oh good grief!

Then one that Kraig posted just this year says!

By Kraig McConaughey "Keeper of the Photos" (Kmcconaughey) on Friday, February 12, 2010 - 10:35 am:

Justin, the Haban 402-D is for the Narrow Frames and the 402-E is for Wide Frame Cub Cadets. I'm not familiar enough with them to know what the difference is. It might not be much. I have the manuals for both models. I believe the front mounts attach to the axle and the wide frame has a different axle so that might be where the difference in the 402-D and 402-E is.

I gave you the link to the manual.
To see the rest of the manuals, take off the part for that manual specific and look at them all!

Richard T...when I get to that stage, I start wondering if I remember how everything goes back together....WOW !! you seem to be having a good time....nice progress pics.

Got a question. I need to make the idle and fast speed settings on an M18 engine. The manual says to use a handheld tachometer. Don't have one & don't want to buy one for this one time use as they look to be running around $80. Is there another way to set these?
