I know nothing about the Quiet line Cubs ; but there has to be a ground strap when you have and engine set on rubber mounts. You say it now turns over and no spark . well that could be just no grond to the engine. I would run a wire from the battery to the coil and roll her over . she might take right off and run !

Jeremiah - hey, sorry I've been away about a week and just trying to catch up. Glad you got a "go by" shield to verify the dimensions and bends. I actually think you're gonna have to bend a few pieces to see how much gain you make and then figure that in. And also remember, it doesn't have to be exact. It's basically a cover to keep the air flowing across the head and across the muffler, and to support the muffler.

Mike F - geez, funny how that stuff shows up again. Wasn't clear to me if you got a Windbreaker or not. Hope so, and that you plan to keep it mounted on the unit. I think that's really the best way to keep them from cracking up. And if you happen upon Bill again tell him I said hi as well. Was that rebuilt engine he showed you a 12hp? I'm trying to recall what I had then - really surprised myself with what I had accumulated and forgotten.

Bill J - maybe Kraig, Oh Great One Keeper of the Photos, can come up with a pic of where the ground strap is mounted on a 1650 or just about any other QL unit. As I recall it should be about a 14ga wire with a bolt hole connector at each end. It will be a twisted S shape, and one connector mounts under the fire wall mount to the frame, and the other one is hard to remember but may bolt to the engine shroud with one of the two bolts that also mounts the voltage regulator - or what ever Kohler calls that little black rectangular part mounted into the side of the shroud. Keep us informed here.

Harry: No worries! As one of my boys tells me, "It's all good!" I keep revising things as they move to press brake; I remember what my teachers emphasized: "Don't attempt a test until or unless you develop an expectation of what will result from your action." I'm in the process of e-mailing my brother with the data gathered so far in the hope that he can direct further effort. I'm going to withhold further posts until I have some metal bent. The end result of the project should be plans by which any interested party can fabricate a replacement part for either the 169 or earlier (lower) HP tractors. I have yet to account for the different head bolt / spark plug locations, but my goal is to come up with designs for each application.

Good Morning, All. I believe the gentleman from Nevada, Iowa is Komer Johnson Jr. His dad made some really cool "miniatures" of tractor and implments. Needless to say everything sold really well on his estate auction in 1998.

David S. After reading about your difficulty plowing makes me glad that I stayed home. I sure don't need any damage done to any of the Cub Cadets or plows.

Off to work so everyone BE SAFE and have a wonderful day.

Bill J: IMHO, Depending on the build date, the ground strap (same gage as the main bat cables)goes from the front starter mount bolt to the right rear lower grill mount bolt, this on tractors w/the main harness laid along the frame then up to the engine and using the cast iron lower grill casting, or....on later builds (at least on the 1450's that I have) the ground strap is a smaller wire (maybe 10 gage) that runs from a rear engine tin bolt to the lower right firewall bolt into the frame, this on tractors where the main harness is routed through a grommet mounted IN the firewall. I have found this to be the case on tractors usng the cast aluminum lower grill housing.

I'll have to check my ser #s and try to narrow down the date when this change was made. Also wondering if anyone else that is into QL's made this observation.

Marlin: You are correct, that is the fellow that had the 1/2 sclae there, I remember the name now that you mention it.

Dave S.

David, I believe that is the way all QL are grounded,, the large wire to the front casting was for starter generator models 1x8,9 and earlier.

I THINK

My ground wire is bolted to the lower front grill to the starter frame bolt. There is a hole just in front of the pedestal too which I think would work fine.

Well then, that blows my theory all to pieces!!
Of 10 Q/L's I have 4 have the ground strap going to the firewall bolt and the harness thru the f/wall. All were build oct '78 (a 1250)and after. Like this....

The rest, all built before march '76 (a 1450), have the ground strap to the grill casting like Kieths. Kieth, do you have the aluminum grill casting ? and what is your build date??

OK, so that backs the alum grill theory up about 15 months using your June '77 date.

That leads one (me anyway!)to believe the change occured sometime between march '76 and your build date June '77. Than narrows it down quite a bit.

Also, for what it's worth (probably not much!!) The straps on my post '78 have holes for the 1/4" bolts also whereas the rest have holes for 3/8 bolts like what's used on the starter and grill mount.

More useless trivia I guess!!
