Steve B - hey you're right. I hadn't thought about using the throttle lever and cable to set max rpm's. I just figured without the throttle stop you could probably push the throttle lever to WOT and get what sounds about 4500-5000 rpms - which I've probably done by accident a few times and really really quickly pulled the lever back.

Hey Jason - did you notice the 582 has outlined white letters on the rear ags?

Jason,
Here's my vote for the front. Firestone Tri-Ribs.

Throttle stop
Harry:
Thank you for the info on the throttle stop as my knowledge is light on this area. I would like to understand this little better so here is my question. I don’t quite understand its function. Currently the way I have it set is when my throttle is at full speed, the engine is running at about 3400. My thought is that the RPM cannot go higher than that. Some where I am not doing something correct or I am missing something. It sounds like the purpose of the stop is to hold the RPM at xxx, but I don’t understand how it cannot go any higher than how I set it. I have everything set up according to the pictures except the throttle stop is not doing anything.
I am thinking that there is a different way to set the throttle. If so, what and what are the benefits?
As always I appreciate the information that I receive from this sight. There is so much knowledge out there and it is joy having this machine and learning from this sight. Once in a while I am able to contribute some things, but usually I just read

Earl,

Loosen the cable sheath clamp on the engine and pull it back toward the transmission about 1/8" to 1/4" then retighten.

This will allow the throttle cable to pull the speed control further back, allowing for more RPM's. Fine tune with throttle stop.

Also don't go too crazy with the cable adjustment, as you could loose idle control (too high idle).......there is a line to walk.

Harry, you act like these things are grenades just waiting to go off if just over rev'ed for the slightest bit to long. Most of my Pro Stock pullers run against the 4,000rpm limit for the entire pull dead pulling 2000+ lbs. and if they are smart they are running 10:1 or more if compression. All in factory rods, cranks, and flywheels.

We only have 1-2 rods break a season out of 500+ hooks.

Then again Top Eliminator runs forged and billet stuff to 7,000+ rpm!

So run forged parts and forget about the governor and stick that carb wide open!!
LOL

Jason,

Not the "norm", but works just fine. Remember, Kohler made these engines for EVERYBODY, and the little hole your cable is in....is there for exactly that purpose...in another application.

If you don't have issues with speed control....leave well enough alone
