The ends unscrew, Yes, I believe that to be the case...

BUT....
The clip that is sticking out of the barrel in the picture prevents turning the end more than a couple degrees. It must be removed prior to unscrewing the end off the cylinder barrel/tube. This is what I am referring to, how to get the clip out of the barrel so I can complete the disassembly.

David,

Looking at it like in the pic, it looks like there is some room above the pin in the slot.

Have you tried to move the pin up and pull it out at the same time?
Or, have you tried to move the pin up and turn the end piece at the same time?

Also, does the pin stick out of the other side?

Ethan,

Thanks. The oil is still in it!

So I took my 125 and 1450 out for a little fun tonight, just some quick laps around my back yard, I love that 1450 nice to see that once hunk of junk brought back from the brink of scrap metal and back to a workin machine.i can’t wait to plow snow with it

Thanks Kraig...the column is black now along with the engine, considering the use this tractor got,it's likely the are both replacements. Wasn't the steering column installed on frame when it was painted? Seems I remember seeing that from a vintage photo on this forum.

David S.- That's a roll in key.I can't tell from the picture which way it's installed but if you hold the cylinder and rotate the end cap the key will roll out of the slot. When you get to the end be carefull, there is a tab on the end of the key in a hole in the end cap and if you go to far it will shear off. If it shears off then you need a new key. Once you get the key out the end will pull straight out of the cylinder. To install, line the hole up with the slot, insert the tab end of the key in the hole and carefully rotate the end cap to pull the key back in. Hope this make sense. Good luck.
Found this, start watching about the 2 min. mark.

Ed and Marty...
Thanks for the link and the info. I think we have a handle on it now. Will need at least one lock ring though as one of the cyl ends just spins around. The plan is now to remove one of the cyls and head for the hyd shop to try and locate parts.

The you tube vids explained a lot. Got a kick out of the guys pansie ass gloves!! Musta never heard of shop towels, a brush and mineral spirits. And in one of the vids following the guy was standing right in the way of anyone seeing just WTH he was doing!! Ha Ha!!

Ethan K. I'm working ten hour days right now. Too tired and worn out to do much anything. I'm hoping for good weather this weekend so I can get the 782D ready for Plow Day. I haven't fired it up in over a year now.
