Hey Tod very nice work on the 126.I am currently restoring my 126 and I can only hope it will look half as good as yours.I have one question-the shifter on my 1200 is very sloppy and all over the place-what could be wrong? Thanks -Keith W.

Morning all. a clear head and a phone call got the 14 all ready to reset. When Jim and i put the 14 back together i thought he set the governor and he just stuck it on. so I`ll start from the beginning today and follow the manual to get her set up.

Christopher Cote (Ccote) I have the Vibratach here that frank C sent me, so i`ll give it a try.

Kendell Ide (Kide) Page 6.31 in the Kohler manual is a great place to start...... Thanks that
is were i`ll start. Thanks so much guys for the help. I `am happy to have the Cub close to running like she should. Later Don T

is there any way to tell if you need new rings?

is there any way to tell if you need new rings?
If she has a lot of blow by and smokes with a lot coming out the breather, i`d say rebuild her . my .02 lol

well i already have the motor torn down but the piston nor the rings look worn to me, i tore it down because it smoked @ low rpm but when i took off the head i found that the exhust valve couldn't quite close all the way (carbon) so now i dont know if i really do need new rings, or is that just a no brainer should i do it while it is torn apart

Matthew Stetar (Mstetar) Check the end gap on the rings when there in the cylinder (level) and look in the manual to see what the gap should be. and go from there. later Don T

Don:
Good luck wrangling a set of rings off the piston to check end gap without breaking them.....Even if he does it, it's obvious that it's burning oil - that would either be rings not sealing or oil up through a verrrrry loose intake valve guide (unless the crank breather is pumping it back into the carb, which would show as a lot of oil in the intake tract).
Matthew - it's about 90% sure that your piston/ring combo is worn ... get an inside mike, measure the bore top to bottom, both parallel to the crank and cross ways, then measure your piston to see if it's close (feeler gauge down the bore, with the rings off and the piston slid back in..) . Check against the manual specs....You might be lucky and be able to just put rings on it, if the bore /piston combo isn't too far gone..keep in mind though that a Kohler mechanic doesn't usually take the engine this far down without replacing the rod.

A simple rebuild does'nt really cost too much. Round the crank, new rod, piston and rings. It's worth doin.

Thanks for the nice comments guys. Little more progress today... its alive! Fired right up & running fine after a little tweaking. Hood, fender deck, & brakes is about all thats left.

Kendell Ide (Kide) Yes you are correct ,I was thinking of the procedure on my rebuild for the ring installation of the new rings in my 14K for my 149 Cub Cadet. I`am have a bear of a time with the 14 K and when Kraiq has it all done then ihope he will tell the rest of us what he did. lol because I just can`t find the right adjustment. Thanks Don T
