I'd be surprised if that engine was original to the 109. From a 1x8/9 series Owner's Manual:

From a 1x6/7 series Owner's Manual:

And further proof, this is an early "prototype" Owners Manual that had the 1x6/7 series model numbering but had the Wide Frame images.

On second thought. I remembered that Hank Will had a chapter on refurbished a 109 in his book "Cub Cadet The First 45 Years" so I pulled my copy off of the shelf for a look. In the "before" photos the engine appears to have been original to the 109 in the book and it has the block mounted dip stick like the one that Bill was asking about. I did notice that the "after" photos of the 109 in Will's book have a 12hp with dip stick mounted by the points.

This is a 12 HP
Model # K 301 AQS
Spec # 47541d
Does this one have Balance Gears?

Frank, yes, I believe they were in all the 12hp Kohlers from the 1x8/9 series on.

Does anyone have a picture or maybe an exploded view of a 3-point for an Original? I'm wondering where/how the lift arm attaches to the impliment lever.

Thanks!

Cellar's full of winter's wood (There's 9 "almost half cord" tiers plus what's not piled):

As Don T.'s loader is going back together this is coming apart:

The "maintenance minder" is toast (I should send it to Jeremiah for a Christmas present) so I'll replace it with a "modern hour meter" (OK, Harry??).

Brought some more parts down today to run through the electrolysis tank:

Thanks Kraig...that was exactly what I needed!

Frank and Kraig - I'm not sure the balance gears were in all the 12hp Kohlers from the 1x8/9 series on Frank's pic shows an AQS engine from what I believe is in his 1200. The dipstick mounts into a hole in the right side of the block. I had a 1978 era 1450 with a 14hp Kohler and the dipstick went thru the top of the block on the right side. In that version the tin shield on the head was larger on the right side with a hole thru it where the dipstick went down to the block. Maybe someone has some pics of that version of the engines. I believe Kohler did the 12hp and 16hp the same way which was after they removed the balance gears. So Frank, yes it's most likely your engine has the balance gears since the dipstick tube mounts against the side of the block.

Now, as far as the 10hp K241 in the 1x8/9 series, I'm not yet convinced they were all the way shown on the Operator Manual (except the 86). The K241 10hp did not have balance gears so I just don't know why Kohler would put the dipstick in the cam cover.

David, not sure if that book is still available however the updated version "Cub Cadet the First 50 Years" is available --> HERE

Michael, just an FYI in case you didn't get all the hardware with your lift or were not certain where it all goes. Note that there would be a flanged bushing, item #5 in the drawing below, in the forward end of the lift bar and additional plain bushings, items #3 (x2) on the cast part and #7 on the rear of the lift bar, so that the bolts can be tightened and the parts won't bind.

Hydro, perhaps Kohler and IH were trying to standardize, to some extent, on the location of the dip stick.

Hydro/Kraig/Bill,

Not to cause any further confusion on the dipstick issue, but I remember some Kohler K241's or K301's that had both the vertical tube on the right side and the left side mounted dipstick by the cam as well. HOWEVER, the right vertical tube was an oil fill tube and when you pulled out the dipstick, it was just a short nub. I think this was primarily early in 1X8/9 series production but may have been in late 1x6/7 series production as well. By the end of the 1X8/9 series, all dipsticks were on the left side by the cam except the 86.

Ron, Kraig, Bill - I'll have to check my parts manual (TC157)and see if it shows both versions for the 1x8/9 series. Ron, I believe the version you refer to, with 2 sticks, was only on the 14hp used in the 147. Since it had balance gears Kohler cited that stubby top stick as the oil fill tube, and the stick on the left was for the oil level measurement. Dang, this can get confusing.

Ron, Kraig and Bill - according to the TC-157 parts book, the 1x8/9 series 10hp K241 engine only had the oil fill tube on the top of the block - meaning the Operator Manual pics are not correct. The 12hp K301 parts breakout shows only the cam cover fill tube. Then I went and checked the Quiet Line 1000 with a K241 and it shows both the oil fill tube on the top of the block, and then what they call a shoulder mount oil fill tube on the right side of the block. So, my take on this is the 1x8/9 series 10hp K241 only ever came with the oil fill tube on the top right side of the block (there was no cam cover fill tube on the 10hp - unless someone changed it)

After failing to find a snowthrower for my 128 for a decent price Im now looking at a cub cadet 268 walk behind and I was wondering if anybody here has any info on them or things I should check before buying it? Thanks

Thanks Kraig, The parts drawing helps. I have all the pieces but I couldn't remember how it went together. It's only been 6 years since I started the restoration!

So a guy gets a PTO rebuild kit one week and gets another the next week. Not unusual right!
Then I get an email saying that neither one worked right for his PTO. I ask for a pic of his PTO and get no reply.
Today, UPS drops this off, which explains a lot! LOL

Hey Charlie - I was thinking of alot of comments, but decided to keep it short. Does that spring only fit upside down when you use Case paint? (LOL-ROF
