tomorrow i am either going to try replacing the fuel line with clear vinyl tubing so i can see if the fuel flow is being interrupted, or, i am going to go look at some 200.00 MTD's ,they have on Craig's list, near me.
as mush as i hate disposable things, if i can get one mowing season out of it, it is worth the 200.00.

i may just buy another 128 some day and use this one for parts.

Charlie - Ya dropped 2 ... who'd I cuss out this time that quit ??

Frank - We don't do $200 MTDs ... better get a running one

i have a hydro leak. it is comming from the top of the two valve buttons on top of hydro pump that is connected to the tranny. This is on a cub 127 could it just need some o-rings or gaskets?

Eric - Pull it then ya'll know. Hard to see the leak from here

(kinda like rebuilding engines from here !)

Hey even Harleys leak so it's got good company !

My 127 has never had a leak and I've had it 13 years and it went through hell. Everyone always complained about hydros leaking.

Eric - You have to pull it to fix it anyway.
#1 Chances are that it's leaking past the plunger coming out the top around the button ... #2 or someone had it out and didn't tighten it.
I'm betting #1.

dont worry, i know better then to ask for help on here with an MTD.
besides, for 200.00, when it breaks, throw it away.

Hey Charlie, thats great 4999 registered.

But how many different people actually show up here in a month??

Charlie - You giving Yo-Yo instructions ?

Frank - There is an MTD section on here ya know ... just not a $200 section

Allen - There's a lot of dead beat members , I found some profiles that hadn't been logged in for 8 years.

i know there is an MTD section. i meant, i would not ask in this section for help.
and i would not pay more then 200.00 for an MTD anyway.
i really want my 128, but my grass needs to be cut.

Looking for some recommendations - going to look at a 1450 soon and the guy says its been sitting for four years. I'd really like to see if it will run as I dont really want a project tractor right now (well I would like a project tractor just no time right now and money is tight). What all should I do to see if I can get this thing running... I'll bring a good battery and I suppose some oil to make sure its full. Is there anything else I should do? I know with cars you can use a drill to get oil pumping first but I dont suppose that would do anything to a non forced lube motor. Should I pull the plug and spray in some PBlaster or something like that?

Oh and one simple question... did all 1450's come with hyd lift? I know the 1250 some did and some didnt, its main reason I am after this one as I'd like a tractor with hyd lift, well and its more HP than either my 2 tractors and I do have a #2 tiller that could use the extra power.

Frank S.,
Have you tried running it without the gas cap on? Maybe yours is clogged up and it's not venting properly.

Tristan-

You might need a point file if it doesn't have spark. If it's been sitting 4 years with gas in it, the carb is full of crap and you probably won't be able to get it to start. You'll probably be able to get it to fire if you squirt some gas in the carb. I use a squirt can of gas and 2-cycle oil so the raw gas doesn't wash the oil off the rings and bore. Hydraulic lift is standard on 1450s and 1650s.

Edit:

Good luck finding something that doesn't need any work. I've had over 40 of these things, and not a single one, including the ones that were "running and mowing" could be put to work without some new parts. Count on having to rebuild the carb since it's been sitting, and since it's a QL, it's going to need engine mounts.

Tristan:if you dont want a project then the two hardest and commonly wore parts are the iso mounts and trunion, I have two units with worn trunions and dont look forward to repairing them. if the motor is not frozen then most likely you will need to do the carb and normal tune up stuff other things may be changing the Hytran and filter.

Terry Reed (Treed)

I can suck and blow air through the gas cap, so that should rule out the cap, but i can try running with out one.
as i said, i am going to try replacing the gas line with clear vinyl tubing, if something is restricting fuel to the carb, i will see the fuel stop flowing.
just hope the gas doesn't eat through the vinyl before the tractor stalls.

hey, what about the gas causing my problems?

I use regular. you can not let the regular they sell around here sit in the carb, even with stabilizer. some guys use premium.I have been shutting the pet cock and letting the carb run dry.
I had this same problem with my other mower and snow blower, gas gummed up the carbs after only sitting for a week.

last time i said this about regular gas, it touched off quite a discussion on here, so please, lets not go there again, but, if something was wrong with gas, stale, had water in it,etc, it would run then stall.then it wont start right away, because water, crap, etc, was in the combustion chamber, until new gas flowed in and pushed it out.
right?
do you think my tractor would act this way if the gas was old or had water in it?

I wonder if running a tank of premium might be worth a try?

Frank Snerd; I have had two engines do this. One was a condenser lead with a bare spot on the wire. The other was flakes of varnish coming from the gas tank and stopping gas flow above the needle valve. I watch your videos and i think you are running out of gas. I found my gas problem and eliminated a fire problem by using a squirt bottle and squirting gas in the carb when it started to die. I wish we were closer so i could help find the problem. Just my 02c

Frank-

If I were you I'd just clean the gas tank very well, replace the shut-off valve, and put a new fuel line on the tractor. This way you will know it's not the fuel and move on to the next possibility. Oh, go back with fresh fuel as well. I would even add an ounce or to of MMO to the fresh fuel. You never know and it sure isn't going to hurt anything.

I think you have internal issues with that engine. You mentioned the valves had been ground and a new head gasket installed. at that time was the crankcase breather cleaned and reinstalled correctly? With all the aggravation you are experiencing I would have pulled the engine by now and replaced it or gone through it again. You should be able to find a good used engine with that $200 MTD money.
