Hey Guys, I'm going to be replacing my transmission case rear cover plate gasket because it's leaking a little, my question is, should I replace it with a dry gasket(nothing on it) or should I apply some kind of gasket sealant to it, thanks.
Dave from CT

Man, I wish they were all mine. Guy can dream right?

Dave H.-

I've had good luck just applying them dry. On some of the CCC tractors, they used gasket sealer at the factory, and it's a real pain to clean off when you need to change the fluid. It'll be easier for the next fluid change if you don't.

Dave, I put mine on dry, torqued to specs, and still leaks. I'm going to take it off, put sealant on it, and give that a whirl next.

I've got to post some post tiller pics. Man does that tiller do a great job!

Big shout out to my friend Rod who came out to till my garden until he ran out of gas. I couldn't resist fillin her up and taking a few rounds before the rain came.

Newbie needs help! Mower will not engage, pto tries to turn but starts glowing red in the center. Does it adjust or do I need a new one? Gordo

Gordon P.
I assume your working on your 104 since you didn't say.
The first thing I would check would be to make sure the PTO button is still there. Then I would remove the belt and see if the deck pulleys turn free. Then maybe the mule drive pulleys.
It could be a number of things.

If it's "glowing red" then the seal around the crank is probably toast now too and the oil is cooked.

New Cub Cadet owner

A buddy is "giving" me a Cub 1050 32" cut tractor. Assuming I can patch up the rusted out mower deck.

The hangers on one side pulled off and the one of the front hangers rusted out. I have a MIG and can "patch" it. But I want to know, is the mower limited to this deck size with the Brigs 10hp?

Thanks
DG

Dave H/Brian J,

On your leaking rear covers, first take each cover bolt out one at a time and coat the threads with gasket sealer and reinstall to required torque specs for 3/8" bolts and see if that doesn't stop the leaking oil. I found on my #2 782 that the threaded holes in the transmission casting got drilled a little too deep at the factory and started to break through into the oil reservoir. The oil would then weep through the threads and leave spots on my garage floor.

If your bolts have been over torqued, the gasket may be ruined. If that is the case, a new gasket is in order and it would be a great time to put fresh HyTran in the tranny but first take the cover plate to an anvil and hit each hole with a hammer a few times to flatten the plate out as the holes can be volcanoed by overtightening. Then reinstall with the new gasket, install bolts with gasket sealer on the threads and torque to required specs. Don't overtighten. Hope this helps.

BRYAN - I just got caught up on a couple days worth of posts. I just added Arthur's Deli to My list of "Best Places to eat in the Q-C's"
thumbsup.gif
It's a short list, Jim's Ribs in RI, Frank's Pizza in Silvis, Any Whitey's Ice Cream, or Country Style @ 23rd Ave & 16 th Street in Moline is actually better. And The Belgian Village in Moline....get their rueben, it's the size of a dinner plate!

And to keep this post Moderator friendly, Mowed yesterday w/982....only stops were for beverages and once to adjust the left brake and add some gas.

Anyone familiar with the Darwin Theory ?

If one can screw up ones first post , one will.

But I'm NOT saying Anything ...

Jason; That is wheel horse stuff.
Ken; Hard to notice you are feeling better.
That 127 is a power house, That has probally had some work. Will check later. The whole tractor has had a lot of custom work like chromed IH bolts, foot plates, stainless steel deck plate. Will check it out better later. Everything for 400, can't complain.

Thanks guys, the pulleys all turn freely. Yes its a 104. No oil leaking as I shut it down right away. What is the pully button? I dont think there is one. Would it be located at the top of the rod that presses into the center of the pto?

Took the day off work and had a good Cub Cadet day. Took 10.50 turfs and tiller off 125 and installed 10.50 ags with doubled-up wheel weights. Put plow on and made 2 passes through garden before rain started. Need to read FAQ to get plow dialed in. Then tried newly aquired Brinley cultivator (Thanks Todd) to knock down plowed area. The 10.50 ags were on my 72, so I then put the 6.50's back on it.
The topper to it all is that my 9 year old helped me and did much of the ratchet work and tried his hand with an air wrench.

I hate to tell ya, but your oil pan will no longer fit in there, it's being occupied by that bolt and nuts.
