Rob, On engines with balance gears, the vertical tube is to add oil only, the side dipstick is the level check. The vertical tube has a short stick, because a long dipstick will hit the balance gears. My 147 with original engine and balance gears is set up that way (the gears went in the trash when I o'hauled it). My 126 (K301)has a factory replacement engine (black engine)also had balance gears (now in the trash can) and a different style side dipstick and no vertical dipstick tube. On it the side dipstick tube is larger in diameter than the 147 and is both a level ck and to add oil. After all these years non factory combinations have been created.

Hello,
I am new here.I hope some one can help me. I have a 127 and a 129 I just bought with bad mower deck bearings and races.I was wondering what is the code on the timken bearings and races are.MY Case-IH dealer wants 48 bucks for both.No way I am going to pay that.I have a local bearing supply placed where I get bearings and races for cost of the supplier.( I have a account with them for years now.)Please help me out on this matter.. Oh they are both 42's decks.

Thanks
Allan

Allan, Just take along samples of the old ones and the seals if they are separate and the brg guys should be able to fix you up. Brgs often/usually have numbers on them somewhere, the brg guys will know where to look and know if there are cross reference numbers or they can go by the dimensions of the old ones.

Allan, Wayne,
$48 bux is not bad... some dealers get 100 bux for them... The assembly is a water pump style bearing... There is a number on them, and through my contacts I have paid $37 for them , but that was quite a few years ago... It is a neccesary evil...

Guys I think I have found the answer to a problem with my Cubs. I never had a way to check the rpms to see if I had them set up correctly at 3600 rpms. I have found an item that will show rps and you don`t need that reflective tape that some posted about. this is around $8.00 and well i`am going to add it to my shop tool chest.I`ll let you all know how it works.

SCOTT T. - I think all the 42 in. decks have the tapered roller bearings. Just the 44 & 50" decks have the waterpump style bearings.

But then in 40 yrs give-or-take it's hard to know what a prior owner has done!

I am switching my 2A tillar from my 1200 to 149 after removing the gear box from the 1200 rearend I noticed it was different from my other cubs.
It has a pin that extrudes at the top and a flush pin at the bottom. And I don,t see anything on parts look up about it??

Jeff, I'm gonna take a wild guess and speculate (OK so I'm being redundant...) that perhaps that's a rear cover from a Farmall Cub and that is a locating pin and someone reversed it (it looks like there could be a fluid level line "rusted in" on that cover that could indicate that it was reversed?) for use on that 1200??? OR someone added the locating pin? The gear drive transmission has a hole location (not drilled) at the center top and a hole at the center bottom that could take advantage of a locating pin.

Here's a photo of an Original transmission (actually the photo is of the transmission from Art's Plow Special). The Farmall Cub rear cover plate is a different part number than the Original's rear cover plate and neither has a fill plug. The rear cover plate for a 1200 should have a fill plug.

DONALD - Good luck with that tach. I don't use mine all that often but it's sure nice when I do.

Mine came with 3-4 strips of reflective tape. Only takes a small piece, maybe 3/16 inch per side to work so it'll last far longer than the adhesive will.

I paid more than $8.00 US shipping & handling! That's a real good price!

Dennis,
My 149's cast iron nosed 42" deck came with the cartridge style bearing assemblies... There must be a changeover/gray area thing on that...
