Long time no post. I'm installing a 1a tiller on my 125 and need to determine what PTO belt I need. Looked in the faqs. and there is no listing for a 125. Parts look-up gave 2 #s. One was same as in faqs and I would assume it is for a wide frame. The other which is # 487-045-R2 I believe to be the one I need. Is this correct and if so does anyone have the dimensions for this belt?

Michael R:
A short summary:

1) IHC did NOT file bankruptcy. Almost.

2) IH was a victim of very bad management during an economic turndown like in today's economy.

3) Beginning in the late 70's, they began to sell off profitable divisions to stay afloat, like Cub Cadet in 1981. By 1985 the only things left were the Truck Division and the Ag division. The Truck division was profitable and their much smarter management took over the company and in mid 1985 sold the AG division and the trademarks to the Tenneco Corporation who merged it with Case to form Case/IH.

4) The remaining division of IH, the Truck Division, as required by the sale of the trademarks, renamed itself the Navistar Corporation. Navistar later became a holding company and today one of its divisions is the International Truck & Engine Company.

5) So, you see, what's left of the old IHC is very much alive & kicking. You'll know that everytime you see a new Internationsl Truck roaring down the hiways and byways of the world..

6) How an inept bunch "experts" trashed and ran the fifth (IIRC) largest company in the US into the ground is mostly covered in "A Corporate Tragedy" as was noted earlier. It's worth finding.

Eddie B,

IH 487 045-R2 is the correct drive belt for a narrow frame model from the front PTO to the tillers 90-degree gearbox. Your 125 is a narrow frame model, i.e. S/N is below 400,000. I do not know the exact length (probably around 135-140"). This is a special width belt (<1/2" width) and is rated for higher horsepower than a typical fractional horsepower belt so you would be best off to order one from your local Cub Cadet dealer. Price will be over $50 but it will provide years of trouble free service.

Myron B./Michael R,

There were three other significant factors that combined to almost a perfect storm scenario that led to IH's demise that people don't always remember besides the inept leadership of CEO Archie Mccardle (spell?) and his east coast management team.

Year: 1979

1. The 6+ month strike by the UAW union over changes in work rules - that IH needed to reduce costs - cost IH millions in lost revenue and sales while still having ongoing operating expenses and forced them to start taking out large loans.

2. The Russian Grain Embargo that Carter put in place after they invaded Afghanistan in late 79 caused farm prices to plummet and put the national farm economy in the toilet for the next 25+ years. This drove many farmers into backruptcy (resulting in larger farms, fewer customers and the virtually the loss of an entire generation or two of farm kids staying in farming) and no one had much money to buy new farm equipment. Prior to the embargo, farm prices had been pretty good and the farm economy was doing well and IH leadership was forecasting strong sales in 1980 and telling dealers to order, order, order so they would have equipment to sell. Then all this product starts showing up in 1980, interest rates going through the roof, and farmers weren't buying and this caused many dealers to get over extended in the early to mid-80's and put them out-of-business. IH then had to take inventory and parts back and pay the the dealers off for the inventory which resulted in further losses.

3. Interest rates skyrocketed up to 15-20% due to the Federal Reserve trying to get control of the high inflation rates at that time. This put the skids on the national economy as well which affected the other divisions of IH. IH was having to borrow large amounts of money and they didn't start buttoning done the hatches until too late (definite lack of foresight by upper management). Their banks started getting nervous and demanding payment and forced IH to start selling off profitable operations to make payments. I think Manufacturers Hanover Bank even went under because IH had borrowed very heavily from them.

The Outdoor Power Products division was one of the first to be sold off to MTD and fortunately they have continued to make Cub Cadets (to keep this on topic). Navistar is all that's left of what was IH as we knew it back in the 70's.

Rich Porter,
If you click the Parts Lookup button above and enter in 102 for the model number and then scroll down to the front axle parts listing, you will find this.

You can also click on the sponsor buttons above and go to the sections where they have steering parts or main parts listings and find it too.

Need some Saturday help. Trying to get the 1450 running. I'm still in the "checking" process, but the problem is that when I start cranking, it will turn over about 2 times and then the hydro kicks in and the tractor wants to move. It does this even though I have the pedal depressed. Obviously, I don't want the tractor "walking" all over the yard while I'm trying to get it cranked but it's also making the starter work harder. What can I do to make it stay in "neutral" while I crank?

My 169 carb continues to leak!! So far I have Soaked it in cleaner, rebuilt it with a carb kit with new gaskets, new needle valve and seat, and as was the latest suggestion, replaced the float and adjusted it per specs. I think it may have a hairline crack somewhere in the casing, although I can't see it. I have a walbro that I am going to try, although it runs almost perfectly with this Kohler so I hate to give it up. If the Walbro doesn't work, I will put the kohler back and just shut off the gas when I finish using it. Thanks to all of you.

Digger, If that was a snake it woulda bit me! I guess that's one place I hadn't explored yet. I sure appreciate your help and THANKS for your patience!! Rich P

I have a problem guys and I was hoping that you all can help me out here. My grandfathers Cub 100 with the 10 horse Kohler in it has developed a problem. First off he only has throttle from about 3/4 to full and the rest is idling. Then when it does get to full throttle it surges bad. And when you go to idle it down the linkage closes and the card closes, but it revs up like its going to blow. And we have to shut it off. I have adjusted the carb and the govenor. I cant for the life of me figure out whats going on. We even pulled the motor to check the govenor to see if its broke and no teeth are broke off the gear. And the weights go in and out and the pin on the inside of the gear goes in and out. And the tab is still on the shaft that connects it to govenor arm on the outside. For the life of me I cannot figure out what is going on. Do you all have any ideas? Please help my grandma is threating to buy a new J.D!!!!!!!
Thanks All,
Chris

Christopher - Either the gov lever has slipped on the shaft or the linkage to/from it isn't set in the right hole. Check everything per the manual.

Jim you need to adjust your hydro linkage which is located under your tunnel cover, very simple to adjust. You might be able to download the service manual which will give you instructions or somebody here could post the instructions.

Thanks Ken. I have checked and rechecked everything per manual. Maybe we arent gettin that shaft tight enough or the sensitivity adjustment is off. Thanks Again,
Chris

have any of you seen the dark green used on a 2003 ford f-250. if so let me know what you would think of a cub cadet 100 painted that color. im considering it and wonder what other people think.
