I finally got around to pulling the head on the K301a that was making the weird knocking sound and I found a tremendous amount of carbon buildup. I cleaned off the carbon the best I could and put it back together. I reused the old head gasket since it looked good. I torqued the head down as per the Kohler manual. Now the motor runs without the knocking sound, however it has a very bad miss and puffs out a little black smoke with each power stroke of the piston. Also the motor does not have anywhere near the power it had before. I double checked the timing and when it does fire, it is right on. Could this be caused by the old gasket

Hi guys. I recently acquired a cub cadet model 105. Gotta say, what a cool little tractor!

So far I've only been using it to cut grass, but I tell ya, I went from using a 6-7 year old JD to this almost 40 year old machine, and what an improvement. The cub seems to not snap off parts on a weekly basis like the JD did.

Great fun working on it so far. When i got it, I thought it was in need of some serious work, but much to my surprise and delight, it just needed some TLC. The pulleys on the PTO were clattering and flopping all around (a new key on the shaft along with tightening up those 3 inner set screws fixed that right up.) The steering was really sloppy with a lot of play--adjusting those 2 15/16 nuts on the side of the bottom of the steering column along with feeding it some grease (which I think it's been begging for for the last 20 years

) took care of that. A few other minor adjustments also and this baby purrs right along.

A question; I understand and read about the hydro creep these tractors get, but how about a 'throttle lever' creep? I notice that after running it a while, the actual throttle lever slowly but surely works it's way down a bit. Nothing major at all, I just push it back up there and keep on going, but can someone offer a few ideas as to what might be causing this? Thanks!

BTW, I really enjoy this forum, full of great info and I especially enjoy all the pictures. Once I get a little paint slapped on my 105 (don't be expecting any sort of professional job

) I'll see if I can get a pic posted.

Jarrod, I have a 105 and a couple of 125s. The 125 is my all time favorite Cub Cadet!

To fix your throttle, provided it is the original throttle lever assembly, all you'll need is a right angle phillips screw driver. Once you round up the right angle phillips screw driver *simply* (yeah, I know, easier said then done) reach up under the dash and tighten the tension screw on the throttle lever assembly.

Jarrod, what ever you do, please do not do what a previous owner did to this poor 125, and drill access holes in the dash!

Ken, relax man, I just thought that this would be the place to ask, ok?

Glen - Now I'll have to go looking at what your question was ... I must have been in one of my moods ......
LIKE RIGHT NOW....

Chris - You don't need to be in possession of any tools if you do that then have to ask a question like that!

Glen - If you can't (and it's hard to believe) get the parts from the sponsors then use your phone book to find parts locally. The sponsors aren't the only ones you can get parts from ya know.

Hi Kraig. Thanks a lot for that info. Nah, no worries. I'll search high and low for the correct screwdriver before I go cutting holes in the dash.

Although I appreciate that picture, as now I know exactly where to find the screw!

Charlie P. One sweet looking gear drive. you aren't turning soft on us now are you? (Guess not since seeing your list of favorite plowing cubs.)

Antonio M. I've only plowed with my 125 and I love it. Hopefully I get a chance to try the 782D out next time. Then it'll be the 100 and then the Original...and ??? Just pick a Cub and go for it. They are ALL good machines.
