Steve B.-

Thanks for the extra info. Not having anything other than 1As makes that something I would not have known.

Scott T.- I will see what I can do when I get it. Should have it after work tomorrow. Do you want measurements or just close-ups?

Scott T., as "Keeper of the Photos" all I can say is EXCELLENT IDEA!

JB, please take plenty of high resolution photos of the decals both close up (as squarely to the decal as possible) and from a bit of distance to show placement on the snowthrower. Also take several overall photos of the snowthrower. I'd like them for my archives so as I mentioned please take them in high resolution and email them to me, email is in my profile. TIA

They can always be reduced for posting. Here's an example of what I'd like to see:

From a "bit of distance" view:

Close up view:

The two photos you posted are good overall views but high resolution versions would be nice for the archive.

Charlie,
Hows'about starting a "Cheap buys and Steals" tread over in the sandbox? This should be good!

JB, a tape measure in a few photos can also be helpful for future reference. Here's some examples:

Kraig- Sounds Good! Assuming I have the snowthrower as planned tomorrow, I may try and take some good pictures this weekend and will e-mail them to you.

KRAIG,
Thanks again for your help, and everyone else as far as that goes for the posting picture help.
Do you have complete picture of that Mott mower?
Thats a thread I'd like to see,a spot
where everyone posted pics of I.H.or outside vender attachments they have for CUB CADETS!
Items that aren't seen everyday!

Hey Guys - sorry I've been noticeable absent, but I still have the FEVER!!!! Got a question that may have been addressed sometime in the past. I have a 169 built Sept 1974 and I'm certain it has the original 13 fin Kohler K341A. My son just picked up a 169 built Oct 1974 and it has a 12 fin Kohler. Does anyone have any details about when the switch from a 13 fin to 12 fin occurred? Were they intermixed in the 169 production? Any help here is appreciated.

Thanks,

Hydro Harry
Old Cubs Never Die - and some historical details are hard to uncover.

Yea I saw that mistake but I ran out of edit time...
JB Evans,
Nice lookin snow thrower.
My old one spent 15 years under a canvas tarp before I bought it but still worked great, looked like crap though...
Tiller Talk,
last one I got was a #2,paid $30.00 at an auction, nice shape too...

Harry,
I was always under the assumption that the 12 fins were always replacement engines.
Hopefully someone can confirm or deny that for us.

Harry-
I have an August of 1974 169 (#519940) that seems to have a 12-fin Kohler in it.

The thing about this engine, which you can see in the picture above, is that the tractor and the engine BOTH seem to have the same aged-patina about them, leading me to believe that the engine is original to the tractor.

One way to possibly find out some info would be to gather data from other 169 owners regarding 1) tractor serial number, 2) Engine spec number, and 3) Engine serial number. Of course it could be a dead-end street if Kohler randomly supplied IH with more than one version of the 16hp Kohler during the coveted 169's production run as the data would just reflect that randomness.

The head-scratcher here is the question mark about WHERE did the "story" ever perpetuate from that a original 169 engine must be a 13-fin Kohler?? I can't remember any IH documentation stating that as fact. After finding this tractor a few years back, I've become a skeptic.

A bit off topic, sorry folks, got a bit involved in other things, Rodney Smith has asked me to post our situation here in Oz.
Thanks Rod, we are safe, well away from the flooding, several hundred kilometers. Our paricular situation is more prone to high winds, which caused significant damage to others around us back in October 2010. And we are about 30 metres up from sea level, & about 500 meters direct distant from beach, so fairly safe should a Tsunami or climate change ever happen in our lifetime!
Hope y'all are coping with the severe conditions over there.

you beat me to the pink bit Aytay! only wondering if they were original, & hopefully 5 toes each.

I once had a very early 1650 with a 13 fin AQS block...tell me that doesn't stir the pot some more....

I wonder if Kohler didn't have several sets of patterns that were switched back and forth during the early 70's as production, repairs, etc. demanded, until the 13 fin patterns eventually were replaced with all 12 fin type.

I'm looking for pics of pallet forks for your GT loader. Either those that you have made, or factory attachments. Thanks.

STEVE, ART, HARRY - Isn't the draw about the 13-fin block the fact they can be bored to 4.000" bore verses the 3.780" max bore in the 12-fin? Meaning thicker cyl walls, less cooling fin depth, more metal in the cylinder area of the block?

Seems with the production volume Kohler makes, that extra iron required for that cyl wall thickness would mean they wouldn't want to run that pattern any more than they had to. I can definitely see them having multiple patterns for the same casting.

I used to visit Sheboygan/Kohler area frequently for work but since most of those trips were to another foundry or a deep drawing SS fabricator I never actually got to see Kohler's operation from inside the foundry. HUGE place though.

Former Boss was the Matl's Mgr there for many years but we never had the opportunity to discuss their operation. I've seen little feature videos of their foundry making CI bath tubs but I know they didn't use that equipment to make engine blocks.

Only K341 I've ever been around was WYATT's 169...
