Good points, Dennis. The only new CC I've had was a 1282 in 1982. My first narrow frame was 20 years old when I got it. My second was 30 years old. I've always attributed their failures to normal and acceptable wear. Not knowing how young the tractors were when a repair was first made, I don't know what should really be attributed to shortcomings in design.

Jerry, I don't think I ever asked Joe why he did the starter mods. I only knew Joe for a few short weeks. I met him through my brother who worked with a guy that knew Joe. When Joe was trying to sell his Cubs my brother heard about it from his coworker. My brother is the parts manager at an Arctic Cat/Yamaha/Stihl/Husqvarna/JD dealership and he has a standing order to inform me of any Cub Cadets he hears about and if any are traded in I have first refusal on it. Even the owners of the dealership agree with me having first refusal, and my price would be whatever they gave on trade.

Since most Cub Cadet owners are smart enough to not trade one in on a JD I don't get many calls.

Short story long... I kinda figured Joe to be an engineer at heart, a guy that liked to tinker and make changes/improvements that suited him. I should have taken some photos of his homemade log splitter, Rube Goldberg would have been embarrassed. I would have been afraid to use it.

Kraig, That was it, thanks. I still stand by what I said, a true surviver is worth keeping factory but a person should always be looking at whats possible.

JERRY - Some of the things I mentioned showed up fairly early in the CC line. I remember an engineer @ FARMALL making a comment about the driveshaft pins breaking in about 1980 give or take a year. I didn't repower the 72 with the 10 hp until '85 and the old driveshaft lasted about four more years. With the K161/181 engines the pins lasted forever and a day!
In about '67 or '68 I somehow got too close to the 1000 gal. LP tank mowing the barnyard and wedged the left frt wheel under the tank. In the process of getting un-stuck I split the potmetal steering gearbox in half. DAD was not real happy. They were expensive even back then!

When I put the K321 in the 72 I wanted to put a second spirol pin in the coupler & driveshaft where they always wear but My parts didnt quite allow Me to do that. I hope the 4140 prehard driveshaft & grd 8 bolts the pullers use lasts. The 1018 CR the OEM shafts were made from sure didn't.

I need to do something with the steering arm for the left frt spindle on the 72, like maybe finish the new HD arm I started 20+ yrs ago! I put heim joints on the tierods on it back in 1985 and they still look like new! I have a toolbox full of OEM ball/socket joints Dad gave Me I'll NEVER use!

Denny, feel free to send me those OEM ball joints...

Or, I'm patient, I can wait for a road trip this spring.

Good afternoon! I have an opportunity to acquire a 1450, complete and running, with deck. I currently have a 149. I also have a QA-42 thrower. I know the 149 is a wide frame, so is the 1450 considered a wide frame, and is so, will the thrower fit the 1450? My 149 only has a 12 HP, not original engine, and I thought the 1450 might handle the thrower better for next years snow. Any input and advice is always appreciated, Thanks in advance. Roger in SW Michigan

Roger, if your snowthower fits on your 149 it will fit on a 1450, both are wide frames. The snowthrower is most likely a QA42A not a QA42, unless it's been modified... but then if it's been modified to fit your 149 it'll still fit the 1450.

Kraig, I'll look at the numbers again, I might have had SNOW in my eye! Thanks for the help!
