Steel wool and some Easy Off oven cleaner will get most of the rust off. Enough to see if the rod is pitted.
Just make sure you don't get carried away with the Easy Off, IT WILL REMOVE PAINT!
If it is, a new seal might help but I kinda doubt if it will last, but hey! You might get lucky.

Has anyone had any luck with replacement hydraulic cylinders? Maybe from McMaster Carr? Part numbers appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

Brian J.-

For what application? McMaster-Carr doesn't have cylinders anything close to what is used in any model of IH Cub Cadet. Not to mention they cost more than what the tractor is generally worth....

Jason, If you can't locate a cylinder from one of the colorful boxes above a hydrolic shop should be able to replace that shaft pretty reasonably.

Well....I see your in the quake state, your reasonable price will be a whole lot different than mine

Kraig, I have been busy all day, not working on a cub sorry to say. From last night and this morning concerning carbs. Were the Carter models used on all the IH cubs? Or did they switch to Walbro's later on? Just curious.

YES I AM YELLING, ONE MORE DAY TO GO TIL A WEEKS VACATION/CUB TIME

Does a K301 and a K321 use the same crank? If not would i be able to use a 301 crank in a 321 or am i better of finding a crank for my 321?

Brendan
yes sir the quake state and you aint kidding just about everything is outrageous here, housing, cost of living, and definatly the people!LOL

well the new 123 has a very dirty carb, ive smelt bad gasoline before but this stuff is so bad it smells sour and is the consistency of honey, its nasty.I took the carb off and the bowl gasket and just about every other crumbled away.

Jason - That's Bio-Fuel in there

It wouldn't be a problem making a new rod for that cylinder. Instead of having one made then chromed I'd have it made from stainless and forget it.

Charlie
the oven cleaner and steel woll worked great

unfortunatly its pitted

ken thats a good idea,SS,it will be a bit more costly but worth it it the long run

Jason.

Just use some JB weld to fill in the pitts and a fresh coat of chrome paint and no one will know the difference.

Doubt it will work, and probly will still leak oil, but at least it will look good.

KEN - There's places that make the ground, polished, & chromed cylinder rod mat'l for hyd. cylinders. A cyl. rebuild shop should be able to find it. Company I used to deal with, SCOT INDUSTRIES makes just about ALL the cyd. rod material used in the US now days. They also make the chrome-plated cyl. tube. Scot has about three plants in WI., one in Texas, and seems like there's a couple other plants around also. The one time I visited their chrome shop in Muscoda, WI they had just chrome plated 40 foot lengths of 5/8" ID alum. tube for tiny BIMBA air cylinders. They're good because it's REALLY hard to throw chrome into the ID of a hole that small that's THAT long.

Problem with a SS cyl. rod or tube is You'd have to use turned, ground, & polished 303 SS and it wouldn't probably be as strong and MUCH more $$$$$$.

morning all. gas just went up today to $119.06 a Liter and i`am looking into getting a cylinder replaced in the 14 hp k ,i haven`t decided what to do for sure and new block is $1300.00 so i was stupid to seel my Bol this last weekend because it had a great 16 K in it. well for now while the 129 is down for paint the 12 will be installed so i will be able to plow snow with the Blade that i`am getting on tuesday from Miane.Q the 12 will fit right in were in 14 came out ,,, Right. is that correct? later Don T

Don T., the 12hp will fit right into your 149 chassis with no problems.

Don, I sure hope this was a typo:

Seeing that lift cylinder rod on Jason's tractor has me making a "note-to-self" to retract the lift cylinder on a tractor I plan on leaving outside for an extended length of time. Heck, maybe a person should also do that to tractors that their removing the engine from in the event they get parked outside at a later date.

Had someone thought ahead to do this on this particular tractor, we can probably assume that Jason wouldn't be in this situation right now. It would have taken 5 seconds.....

I have a narrow frame hyd lift sitting on the shelf at home that looks just like this one.

Yep not a typo on the gas price.and the lift cylinder is just a waste when you own it and don`t look after you equipment. maintence!!!!! that cylinder will have to be replaced. i do think they can be reground and a bigger seal put in to make up the difference from stock. i know that has been done. later Don T

Roger M,

My 149 ammeter jumped around like yours when I first got it. I put a new set of brushes in the S/G and it now charges nice and smooth. Also make sure you polorize your S/G after removal and replacement of the brushes. As for the overheating, I would say its either a bearing/bushing problem or your voltage regulator may be overcharging. Check the bearing and bushing while you have it apart and clean out the carbon powder in the housing with an air hose. Be sure to wear safety glasses. I wouldn't think a loose belt would cause it to overheat on the bushing end. My $.02

Art - I started to mention that last night but didn't. I've seen a lot of loader cylinders ruined that way and my buddy has a lift boom like Lonny has on his cub that looks like it has sat in a salt mine because of the pitting.

Art, good point! FWIW I always store my AC620 loader with the bucket rolled back and the loader arms in the down position so that the hydraulic cylinder rods are all the way in. Same for the CAT-0 lift on the AC620 it is always stored in the down position with lift cylinder rod all the way in. I thought that I checked the parts 149 when I got it, that it has the lift cylinder rod in as far as it would go. I guess I better recheck it. Can't tell exactly from this photo.

Good day all. I havn't been on recently due to other commitments ( some being Don T's 149 ). Don did typo on the gas price it should be $1.1906 but I've seen it as high as $1.21 today in Halifax. If this keeps up we'll have to convert all the cubs to diesels. Have a great day guys.
