Did Anyone have any input on the Chrome IH hubcap question I asked in the Feb 5th thread? Or maybe it got flipped so fast into archive that nobody saw it?

John,
I looked and couldn't find you question. Try it again.

Can someone give me some history on when IH Cubs when from chrome hubcaps to the stamped "IH" logo on them? I have a Cub 100 with chrome, and I think the 123's came chrome from the factory. Not sure when they went to the IH logos - but have seen many 82 series with them. Thanks. JB

John: I just don't know about anything before the CCC 82 series which used the plain "Moon Caps."

John
The hub caps were an accessory and did not come as standard equipment, although they are shown on a 782 in a 82 series brochure dated 1985. The embossed hub caps are shown in a 1972 Parts and Accessories, as part number 407 274 R1 and were $15.00 for a set of 4 (a mint set now is more than $300.00 ). The plain, unembossed, hub caps in a 1964 Parts and Accessories catalog are part number 999 563 R91 and were $10.30. I do not have a accessory catalog dated between 1964 and 1972, so I don't know exactly when the embossed caps became available.

Maybe this will help on the IH Hubcaps. I have a 1969 accessory booklet and a 1970 booklet. The hubcaps in the 1969 booklet are the plain ones. Those in the 1970 booklet have the IH logo. I also have the 1972 booklet with the IH logo hubcaps. I am most fortunate to have 3 sets of each of the two models. At this time, they are not for sale. Maybe some day.

Looks as though someone is going to have to sit me down and show me about posting pictures correctly. I would appreciate it.

Speaking of hub caps, touch-up spray and tractor covers, I have seen those early accessory catalogs sometimes list an umbrella.

I think those umbrellas are cool. Are they available somewhere in a reproduction, or are they available anywhere. I have looked on line and haven't found anything. Does anyone know if an umbrella was listed as a Quietline accessory?

William, thanks for the narrowing down of when the IH embossed hub caps first showed up. I fixed your post.

The 782 was the only Cub Cadet to come standard with hub caps.

I just clicked on refresh and now the pics look OK. Go figure!

Brian, these are from a December 1975, Quiet Line Series, Special Duty Equipment brochure.

Those umbrellas are pretty cool. Maybe Aaron could be persueded(sic) to knock-off one of those styles??

BRIAN - tractor unbrella's are still available. Quick search showed lots of places still sell them, like here, http://www.gemplers.com/product/TU56-WHI/Deluxe-Tractor-Umbrella?gclid=CNCJ4p2RqbUCFYtaMgodz0MAWw&sku=TU56-WHI&CID=25SEPLA&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=TU56&ef_id=UNW-PwAAS8sRDB2J20130209113547s

Richard Christensen has made sun shades for a couple of his Cub Cadets to ward off the hot Arizona sun when he mows. They're more like the ROPS with sun shades used on full size FARMALL's only scaled down to CC size.

I've never run a tractor with just a ROPS & sun shade, been in lots of tractors with a ROPS inside the cab, and they all seemed to be a very rigid structure, as one would expect a ROPS to be. Dad used to mount an umbrella on HIS tractor in the summer for cultivating corn/beans, running the combine in July, mowing hay, raking, baling, etc and frankly, I never cared for them. Even with ALL the braces & supports they wiggled around a lot.

Around 1966 Dad & the neighbor both got Koehn Tractor Cabs for their main fieldwork tractors. They were a glorified Heat-Houser with a light tubing frame that mounted on the fenders or Dad actually welded up supports to the axle carriers for the 450 Farmall he had at the time. The tube framework supported a fiberglass rectangular tub about 3 t wide by 5 ft long over the operator and had plexiglass windows that slid up into the roof, at least that was the idea. Normally they stuck then broke. But that cab was much better than an umbrella, shade in the summer and kept the cold winds off in early spring & late fall. It even had canvas side covers over the engine & lower cab sides to blow heat back around the operator. The only problem was climbing into & out of the rear entry door on the 450 with the Fast-Hitch, the T/A & LPTO levers, and around/over the seat thru a doorway only about 14-15 inches wide. When that cab was on the 4010 JD it wasn't so bad, the side entry door was around 2 ft wide.

Thanks for all of the info on the hubcaps. Now I gotta get the expensive ones! LOL

Can I assume we have no members in battle with the New England snow storm? My Brethren on the other color tractor sites are in the thick of defending their driveways up to as much as 3ft of snow - and no let-up!

If you got 'em - now's the time to use 'em!!!!!!

Get those plows and blowers (and digital cameras) going!!!!!

Kraig,
What is the year of the 782 brochure you posted? This one is the same picture, and used for the 782 and 782D, but does not list "Chrome Hub Caps" as standard equip. Since this one covers the 782D also, it is from CCC, and the 782 in the picture has embossed caps, but the 782D pictured with it and on the cover has plain hub caps. Brochure number is AD-33387-N3, which if CCC followed along with the IH system of letters for the year of brochures, manuals, etc., would be 1985.

Can anyone tell me if BKT TR-315 lug tires are any good? I think they are made in India.

Paul/Kraig/John,

When IH introduced the 82 series I know 782 came standard with the chrome IH embossed hubcaps that had been available as a parts accessory for many years. This was the first time IH had ever made the hubcaps standard on a Cub Cadet. We can only guess at the reasoning for this, maybe they were trying to dress up the 782 to set it apart from its siblings as the top of the line model Garden tractor, or give the customer more value for their money as the 782 listed for almost $4K in 1980 or maybe they were trying to promote sales of hubcaps through parts by putting them on one or two models and people would see them and then want a set for their Cubbie. I don't think the hubcaps were ever high demand items back in the 60-70's as we never sold any during that time when we were a dealer. I also think hubcaps were standard on the 982 but I could be wrong on that.

After IH sold off the Cub Cadet line to MTD/Cub Cadet Corporation my guess is that they used up remaining inventory of the IH embossed hubcaps until they were depleted and then switched to the plain baby moon hubcaps on 782's supplied to IH dealers. I do not know if hubcaps were standard on yellow and white 782's that CCC built. My #2 782 is the 2289th (Serial #702289) made by CCC for IH and has the IH embossed hubcaps.

Brian W,

Those umbrellas are neat to have but I need to warn you that they don't do well when mowing around trees. SnowCo made two styles umbrellas for Cub Cadets, the deluxe style like Dennis provided a link too and a buggy top style. We had both styles on Cubbies we used to mower our implement lots at our dealership over the years. I always liked the buggy top style best as it provided more shade. The deluxe style worked ok but didn't fair well one day when I was mowing around a tree and it got hooked on a low hanging branch that I didn't see and I mangled one of the extendable arms. I still have the umbrella to this day as we never did sell it. I always thought the steel framed protective canopy the IH made for the wide frame 1X8/9 and QL series was the ultimate umbrella to have but they were an expensive accessory that most farmers weren't interested in spending the additional money on.

just a quick question from a newby....i should know this but is the 169 a wide frame or narrow? ive read that the QA36 and 42 will both fit it but im not sure........help!!!!!

and yes bill, i just got 18" dumped on me here in NY....im just south of albany. i may have found a snowblower att. for a steal......fingers crossed....:D
