No Spark!
Hi everyone, i have an issue i can't solve. My 1450 only runs in winter to blow snow, i took it out and it ran for a while and the stopped. I would try it again in 20-30 min and would run again.
I change the spark plug and seemed fine then it stopped and never had a spark again. Since i then i changed the coil, condenser, spark plug and break. Still no spark so i moved to the break pedal safety switch and bypassed it with no luck on the issue. Is there anything i missed ? Thanks for your imput

Dominic,
First of all you came to THEE BEST IH CUB CADET site there is.
Is the snow/water getting into the breaker point enclosure or engine compartment onto the coil??

Yes i did get a new coil, i changed it in at -20 and at first put the - and + backwards then fixed flipped them. I did remove the quite line covers and left them off because i figured it was overheating. I have 12v on the coil(+) and engine(-). I also made sure the spark plug wire was good. When i changed the break i did it indoors and gapped it at 020 and cleaned the area well (no oil/ice). I did not put the cover on yet because i want to make sure it starts first. I think my old coil is still ok, i should put it back and try again.

Is there a chance balance gears are in this engine?

Dominic, once had a set or points where the wire on the points had broken at the connector, you can ohm it out to check it. Also if you can when you install the capacitor mount it so it faces with the wire end down with a loop to keep water from running down to the capacitor. This last tip I learned from someone here but I can't remember who to give them their deserved credit.

I attached some photos you may find interesting (two hydo lifts with each a set of levers i installed) snowblower and a blade in the back. I must thank you for you time on this, so far it's wasted a lot of mine. I don't have an issue with the break points i tested the ohms (fine) as to the engine with balance gears i don't know. how could i find that out and what does it do to the starting part?

Keith: I interpret Mr. Kirk to be saying that you need not worry about balance gears unless your engine uses a starter/generator. I've also heard discussions to the effect that balance gears weren't used on the smaller engines (6, 7, 8, or 10 HP), but were used on the 14 HP and the 16 HP, I'm not sure if they were used on the 12 HP or not. Perhaps one of the resident experts will drop by and straighten us out.

Anyway, from what Dave said, you don't need to worry about balance gears in your 1650.

Aside to Brian, good question, I'm glad you asked it; I certainly learned something.

Edit: Dominic, the balance gears are internal; their discussion has no effect on your starting issue. Cool hydro lifts, by-the-way.

Dominic,

Your questions popped in while there were ongoing discussions about balance gears, wheels and tires, leaf mulching, mower decks, etc. The balance gear posts are not intended to address your no start condition.

The no start is Spark, Fuel, or Mechanical. It seems we tend to start with Spark first when troubleshooting. Running for 20 min and then stopping could be a bad coil. The issue with Spark is to trace the power from the battery to the spark plug under running conditions. So we recommend checking each component, connection, and wire, including the grounds.

A couple of years ago my tractor suddenly started running very rough, then died. Maybe started and ran rough for a few seconds a couple of times and then would not start. Points were fried, put in a new set and all was right again. Good luck!
