Norm, You don't have the rest of the diagram. I do not believe there is enough information. The A thru J conector is just that, a connector, right? C D and J are the charging system but I don't know what they go to. It shows one 24 volt battery, I used 2 12's just to get mine to run but I never did figure how to charge it, good luck. Let us know if you figure it out.

I don't think you have all the wiring diagram either, or you have a diagram for an engine coupled to a genset. I used a new 4A032-4 Teledyne (smaller than 4A084) on a Cub Cadet Original, but the wiring is different than what you are showing for the 4A084. Both engines run off of a magneto. The 4A032 can be started with a pull rope or can be equiped with a 24V starter, I don't know about the 4A084. The only "wiring" I did on mine was to move the engine mounted magneto kill switch to the dash for convience, and add a stock 24V starter, which I operate off a 12 V Lawn and Garden tractor battery. The used engine I got the starter from also had a 24V Motorola alternator on it, but I am not using it. The tractor is used just for shows and to play with, and I just charge the battery before each time I take it to a show, and it will start the tractor multiple times during the weekend, even though I am just using 12 V to operate a 24 V starter. I don't know how often you would use your wood spliter, but since the engine doesn't need battery power to run, just consider using the batteries to start the engine and recharge them as needed and don't worry about a charging system..

dross: yup, A thru J are connectors and I agree, I can't see how the batteries are charged - not enough info. I am about to the point of just using a trickle charger when the thing is parked in the weeds. My concern with doing so is that i have tried help neighbors by loaning stuff out when needed (I think we are all in this together) and I hate to have RubeGoldberg crap.

memorgan: I do agree, I don't have all the info. I will probably use the trickle charger as you suggest. The 084 has a 24v starter and I have two 12v batteries that will be wired in series. I suppose using the engine alternator to charge them is just an ego thing that I hate to pass up.

Norm, I&J appear to be the outputs from the alternator. I bet you will find 24v there when it is running. If you note on the bottom of the page there is a box labeled 'VR' or voltage regulator, which can probabily charge the battery and some other small items.
 
Yup, I thought I would try that but I haven't attempted starting it yet. At the present time I am trying to remove the spark plugs so i can spin it without compression and throw the oil around a little. I can't get a socket on the plugs numbered MS 51009-3. Whud-a-thunk-it. I don't know if the wall of my sockets are too thick or the spark plug is a size never conceived by Craftsman.

Allen, The problem is you'd prolly have to get 24 into it to get 24 out. It wouldnt be inconcievable to think the other two wires are a pos. and neg. Therein lies the problem which is which. Bet you only get one chance.
I called 5 phone numbers today starting with Continental. Every conversation I had ended with it was built for the military. If I get a minute tomorrow I'm going over to the local reserve station and just ask somebody. It shouldn't be a secret.
 
I got it oiled up and a little gas in the fuel pump, cranked it for about 5 seconds, it popped and sputtered about three times and wham - 3600 RPMs. However, there is not 24v on I and J. there is nothing. I think there is another wire, that is not in the diagram, that goes to a lug on the solenoid. Maybe that is it.

Another comment, in case you decide to mess with an xUS engine: They are new in the box with an oil preservative inside intended to keep them free from corrosion. I have found out that this black ugly crap should be drained, the engine filled with oil, run about 20 minutes, drained again and filled with new clean oil, and the filter changed. I was shocked to see the black crap but it is not a sign that the engine is used.
