My 782 came with what I am guessing to be a 44c mower deck. I am guessing 44c because it has the smaller speed up pulley. It did not have the pulley cover and I found one on eBay and have it painted and ready to go. When I put it on it seems to be rubbing or binding one of the pulleys. What I discovered is the deck has a secondary plate on the top of the deck. It is sandwiched in place by the mounting of the deck spindles. My question is if this is standard. If I were to remove it and put the spindles back without it, it might provide enough clearance for the cover. I suspect it it is there for additional rigidity and strength.

Yes, it does belong there as a reinforcement.
You need to determine just what is rubbing and where.
May be one of the pullies is maybe bent on one side?
 
Thank you Sir. Yes I thought so. I can't figure out if this deck was damaged and repaired or it was just shoddy construction. Some welding around one side really looks wonky. I can't believe it came from the factory like this. The surface welds on one corner are not evident at all on the underside of the deck so it doesn't strike me as being a structural repair.
If I have to, I will figure how to shim up the cover a tad. I had removed and cleaned all the spindles and replaced a Zerk fitting. (Thank you Oscar U. Zerk)
The spindles seem true and spin effortlessly with very little play. Pretty impressive.

That deck looks like it's had the crap beat out of it.
Those welds look like chicken crap!!
Typical "Custom by Cobble Craft" if you ask me.
I'd look for a different deck, if yiu already haver good spindles it would be an easy chore to make one good one.
The issue is finding one that is in much better shape shell wise.

Well said Sir. The thing is I have used the deck and it seems to work great. Like I said those welds on that one side are not visible at all on the underside of the deck so I wonder why they are there. Because the underside is good I think there is plenty of metal there and I can clean those up without compromising the integrity of the deck. We'll see.
We just don't seem to have the inventory down here in southern Georgia like the midwest or northeast. I did see a 50" deck for sale that looked to be in great shape when I first got my 782. But I hadn't really used mine at that time and then when I did I didn't want to spend $500 for six more inches of cutting width. Also I have never cut mine own grass before I moved here in March. I love cutting the grass on this thing. I'll keep an eye out for one on Marketplace and Craigslist. I love hunting "Cub Cadet" But it will have to be a really good deal because this one seems to function great.
It just has a face only a mother could love.

A pro welder could clean that up a lot if a solid shell can't be located. They are getting harder to find, but are out there.

Thank you for the reply . I kind of got sidetracked working on KT 17 valves. What I discovered was the deck itself was not flat or relatively true where the spindles mounted. Over the years they had been somewhat pushed up or crowned which was causing the binding of the pulley cover. The extra plate for the deck was also a little crowned as well. I have a 6 X 6 steel jewelers plate I could put under the mounts and they trued up pretty good. I feel pretty confident that issue has been resolved. The problem is I hit them with some primer and some paint and in southern Georgia they are never going to dry HaHa
My sense is the deck is actually pretty solid. Like I said on the underside there is no evidence of cracks or damage where the welds were done on the top.
I think there is enough good to this that it can function well. Right now I need to get the grass cut so when the season ends I'll go after the poor welds and clean them up. My neighbor is a good welder and I'll have him give it a once over.
Looking for a muffler is anyone has one!

Check our sponsors that salvage old Cubs. Doubt a new one is available. If that doesn't pan out, there are a few used mufflers on Ebay. Ones from a Magnum 18/20 82 series will fit.

Thank you. I have been watching eBay and that is great information about the 18/20 82 series. That can broaden the search. Part of the fun of owning one of these tractors is the fun of the search. Patience

In this case it should be 751-3014

Step #2 enter that number in the part number "search" block
Where used " should pop up, then click on that.

The model numbers of all that number should then pop up.

This is really nice of you to take the time to do this. I am sorry but are you talking about the Cub Cadet site at Shanks? I looked there at the schematic and got the 751-3014 and then went to the home page for the part search block. I did not get a used option. Did I go to the wrong site?

On the deck, if you can find a 50" for a decent price and have plenty of room to use it, go for it.
I put the 50" from my 1872 underneath my 1450 (only because I was getting ready to mow and realized I left my 44" at my parents) and wow!... you wouldn't think that it would make that much of a difference but it really does. Shaved a good half hour off my mowing.
